okay. i bought the car (2000 Pontiac Sunfire) without working rear speakers a full year ago. Mind you, i still have the stock sound system in ($ has been lacking for that recently). i assumed the wires were just disconnected, as absolutely no sound came out.
However about 20 min ago i was in my car and suddenly the music got louder- my left rear is now working. of course it sounds horible because it is not screwed in properly at all (checked and could jiggle and slide the speaker around through the trunk.) the right rear, which is not working at all, is secured properly.
does anyone have any clue as to why this would happen?

It could be several things.
First, open the trunk and look at the wires. There should be two going to each speaker, make sure they are connected.
Second, take apart the dash (using the directions in the Library) and pull the radio. My guess is that someone hacked up the wiring to install a cd player, and then shoved the stock one back in to sell you the car. Look and see if the wiring is poorly connected using scotch locks, or any other means that are less-than-stock. This would explain the intermittent functioning of the speaker.

yeah, just checked the wires and they are connected. guess im tearing apart the dash this weekend. oh darn

I think the Sunfires are pretty easy. There are 2 screws in the trim around the radio down at the bottom, and I think there may be one in the side of the trim when you put the glove box door down....if I remember right, Sunfires are much easier, you could pull the radio and check the wires in 5 minutes.
