amp specs:
# 100 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms
# 200 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms
# 400 watts RMS x 1 bridged output
sub specs:
500 watts (peak) and 250 watts RMS
so after about half an hour of use amp gets REALLY hot. could it be that the sub overpowers the amp? or is it something else? any ideas?
You're possible driving the amp too hard, how high is the gain set?
Also, how is/are the sub(s) wired? It might be too low of an impedance for the amp.
it is wired straight to 4 ohm sub, and i adjusted the gain perfectly (less than half way)...
ok i know this is a thread jack but dont audiobahn amps have a intercooler just to stop this same problem? it just seems funny that something like that is overheating.

less than half way does not mean a damn thing if you clipping your clipping. if you hooked the same amp to an eclipse deck with 8v outputs you would prolly not even have to turn the gain up at all.
i tuned the amp, sub does not produce ANY clipping even at full volume (which is extremely loud!)
How did you tune your amp? And are you sure about no clipping? Did you check it with an occiloscope?
you mean oscilloscope? no, i tuned by ear... it's not that complicated... it's set at like 1/3
i just found that my hu gives out 14.4 volts, i guess i should turn off gains completely then
no that was DC voltage... the output level is at 4V @ 100 ohms... so i should be fine where i am with the gains
we got the same radio...so its a 4 volt output , is the amp turning off or acting up? most amps do get hot....unless the amp is shutting down i wouldn't worry too much.....BTW im from Flushing......
Man am I a screwup. All this time I could be setting my gains by ear. Anyone wanna buy my multimeter? I don't need it anymore, I can set your gains by ear! I forgot, you're an expert, and you believe your sub could possibly be overpowering your amp. My bad.
well i am no expert, but just out of curiosity i am wondering how many people actually used oscilloscope to tune their amps? it's like counting your change at mcdonalds
every time you buy a $4.83 burger and pay for it with a 5 $ bill.
You're the one who said you tuned your system by ear, so therefore there is no clipping. Multimeter/test tone is a million times better than ear. Oscilloscope would definitely show the AC wave and any type of clipping. Your ear can't do that. Even with a multimeter, if done properly, there should be no clipping.
I use an o-scope everytime....... setting it by DMM is almost as bad as setting it by ear

Ditto, our ears can hardly "hear" bass, let alone distorted bass
