i know i been posting a lot lately, this is because i have a huge project going with my cavalier. ok here is the story, i purchased a cheap tach off of ebay and an rksport tach adapter (huge mistake of course). neither of them work (together or separately, i don't even get half a signal) and of course i can't return either of them. so i went to wal mart and bought another tach. this one is by equuis (pardon my spelling) and it does give me half a signal. so now to my question. i have 3 options : buy another adapter for 80$ from autometer or msd and install it with one of those tachs or buy a tach with a 2 cyl option (costs about as much as adapter + tach) or make my own diode (which i have no idea how to do).
i've spent wrench of time researching and gathering info on how tachs work with our cars, but i just like to hear your guys' inputs on what would be the best thing for me to do.
Get an Autometer 9117 Tach Adapter
/thread
I've come to the conclusion after trying a used RKsport Tach Adapter and a brand new one that they are junk. I even sold the new one cheap and Jeremiah couldn't get it to work. I'm using a relatively cheap Tomotorsport Tach with my Autometer Adapter and the readings are amazingly close to the stock tach in the cluster I just installed. I bought my 9117 off eBay used and I've had a working tach ever since. I'll probably have my setup for sale in a week for anyone interested in a setup guaranteed to work.
In your situation, return the tach to Wal Mart, find a used 9117 Adapter, throw the RKsport Adapter in the trash and then enjoy your cheap working tach
Or you could just find a cluster with a tach(so much cleaner imo)

i vote this.

ok i returned a wal mart tach and now i'll be on a lookout for autometer adapter or maybe a new cluster... but how do you wire it?

Tachometer Signal Wire Installation for 2.2L engine(s)
You will need a 9117 Auto Meter tachometer adapter. Locate the pink power wire at the ignition module, cut this wire in half and wire the adapter between the two cut halves. The adapter will then provide a good useable tachometer signal.
If you don't get a signal at first, switch the ends connected to each end of the pink wire and you should be fine.
Since you have a 00+ I don't think you even have to mess with Theftlock like I did with my '97 cluster in my '98. I'm pretty sure you can pick up an 00-05 cluster from a 'Fire or 'Cav and it's plug/play.
I am having the same problem i heard that you can wrap the wire around one of the coils on the coil pack where the spark plug wire plugs into is that true. and if thats true couldnt you just wrap the wire around the spark plug since its still going to the same place. I have searched and searched for the pink wire but its hard to find especially since theres so much stuff the way.
I have searched the interior forum over and over and even posted a bulletin not to long ago and didnt get any responses to what i want. I have been to that page before but it doesnt help because his coil pack is on the side of his engine mine is in the middle in the back right next to my oil filter and is harder than hell to get into im thinking of removing the throttle body and everything else thats in my way but its just to much work for something so small so wanted a easier and faster way.
i have wired my Equuis tach to ign timing control wire, but you can also wire it to a spark plug wire but it'll read a little slow. i didn't use any adapters and i did it in like 10 minutes. and it reads perfect and it's very responsive and you even get 3 backlight colors to choose from
