Aftermarket CD Player 2000+ HELP!
Wednesday, July 09, 2008 10:47 PM
i bought Metra brand mounting bracket. and Metra brand wiring harness. ...i just got the cheap ones caz i dont care about the chimes... but i ran into a problem after wiring the harness up. i used a check light [dunno its proper name, lol] to see if i had power. it did have battery power. but nothing on ignition!!!!!! WTF?!?!?! ...everything is connected good, and the right way. i checked thousnads of times after i found out it wasnt working! so i guess my question is, WHUTS WRONG WITH IT??? ....as for right now the ignotion wire on the harness is sliced into the ignotion of the fan on my AC/heat. i dunno if this is good or not either. umm, its not fused ATM so when i turn the fan on the radio turns off. but at the end of the week when i have more time i will fuse it so everything works correctl. oh! i have another question. ....if i fuse it. [only if there is no answer to the first question, that can be done super easily!] DO I USE THE FUSE SIZE OF MY RADIO TO FUSE IT? OR DO I USE THE SIZE FUZE OF MY AC/HEAT????

thanks!

Run an inline fuse for your radio.

I'm not sure what you're asking, are you trying to get power for your cd player?

I ran a wire from my fuse box to my deck.

yes i am trying to get power to my radio! it was not working at all! ...untill i ghetto spiced it into the AC. but i wanna do it the right way. and that light up tool that tells u if there is power or hot wire or whutever, said the line that was for CONSTANT POWER worked and had power going to it [it lit up] but the IGNITION WIRE did not light up at all [no power running to it]. which is weird. the radio didnt work at all! [untill like i said, i had to splice it into a wire on the AC] and the whole purpose of that harness is so u do NOT have to splice into, and hard wire ANYTHING! umm, i dunno how else to explain it. so i hope this helps!

I pulled my wiper fuse out of the fuse box, wrapped the stereo's power wire around it, shoved it back in, then hid the wire under my dash.

Your stereo will always have power if your key is in the accessory position.

Super easy.

i really dont wanna add much more to the fude block. ......ESPECIALLY the wipers! all my neons and strobes and crazy things like that r attached to the wipers and othe random fuses. i think i will just put an "add-a-fuse" right into my AC line i spliced and just hook it up that way so i can use both at the same time......only if that method will work tho. and if it will be a better idea beacuse of the reasons above, lol. whut u think about that way? and will that work? ....i think it should

I guess that would work too, but get someone else's opinion first...that's pulling a lot from your fuse box.

never heard of anyone doing that !! thats your problem. whyd you have to splice it anyways .. as far as i know . all the power you need is comming from the harness itself. let me help you out here.

im assuming you have a 00-02 cavi so the harness i have pictured is the standard harness you would use for most GM models .
im also using a pioneer head units harness for reference .. should be about the same as other aftermarket stereos or close enough.

metra or the like harness ......................................................................radio harness

[color=yellow]yellow wire - battery constent power .......................................... yellow wire - battery constant 12v power
red wire - ignition wire/ switched ............................................... red wire - accessory
orange solid - ...................................................................... orange white stripe - illumination
black - ground - .................................................................... black - ground .

and im sure you can figure out the colors for the speakers

FOr the extra illumination wire from theRADIO harnes there really isnt a wire for it on the metra harnes. this wire is to dimm the lights on the radio when used with the cars dimmer switch. i just didnt use it. i never dim my lights anyways .

again you shouldnt have to fuse anything .. the radio itself is already fused. and shouldnt have to splice into anything esle in the car. iv never heard anyone splice into the Ac .. or wiper blades.. the cars wiring harness has all that you need.

ya. mine is a pioneer also. i didnt connect the orange illumination one either but the red/accesory wire was not getting any power at all after everything was wired up and connected. just the constant was....but the radio did not turn on. so my friend installed one on his Olds and said he had the same problem, and he spliced into the ignition on the AC and it worked fine. but now when i turn AC off/fan on/ or anything else on the AC it turns off the radio. so my question is [since it almost works that way.] if i fuse that line. ...because in the posts on hard wiring yur radio they was to fuse ignition in like all of them. if i add a fuse into my AC line will both then ba able to work at the same time?????

check your cars fused first ...

If you are worried about pulling too much power from the fuse box, why don't you run a relay from the box and feed main power from a stronger source,
like the battery. If the relay runs on key switched power, it won't drain the battery while off so you don't have to worry about draining the battery down
or melting your fuse box

Your car doesn't have accessory at the radio, there is an accessory wire in the key switch harness though, you'd just have to fuse it and run it.

i found out y it wasnt working hooked up to the AC. its because GM decided with their new circutry [not having the Accessory line in the harness - so u can have the radio on with no keys in it] - and i believe that changed when they changed to OBDII...but anyways. they made it reverse polarity. so the positive line i spliced to get power to my radio at ignition, turns negative when u turn on the fan or AC or heat. <--- all said by owner of local audio shop. [if he's wrong plz correct me!] so i just extended the line and pulled the ignition fuse, stuck the wire in, and put the fuse back in. problem solved, lol!

If you're running this much stuff you might want to consider a dedicated accessory line.

1. Run a wire (like you would a Sub Wire from your battery or a very strong constant 12v source) .. Fuse it.
2. Connect the wire to a relay
3. Connect an ACC wire to the relay - this coudl b e your windshield wiper tap fuse - but make it the only thing going from windshield wiper.

This way when your key is turned, the winshield wire will flip the relay and give you a strong 12v source that only exists when acc is on. It won't drain your windshield line at all because the windshield is only flipping the relay.

Take all the stuff that you are running like your neons strobes etc. and hook them up to your newly created 12v+ line. You could also use this line as the ACC for your stereo. and not worry about overloading any of your original circuits since everything is on a new dedicated circuit that you've created.

My friend and I did this with his car he had like 6 neons, 2 strobes, underbody lights, a gps unit, and a stereo. No problems at all with this setup after a few months..

I did it once with a power converter and 7" screen so I could run a PS2 in my glove compartment.

My advice would be to lose the neons.
