mounting location
Wednesday, July 30, 2008 11:41 AM
So heres my problem i have aftermarket speakers in the front doors and in the rear deck. i also, have two amps to push both sets of these speakers. Now im not the most amazing person at fiberglassing or doing custom interior work, so that being said im looking for some ideas on where to mount both of these amps in my trunk and still have it look good. thanks

if a spare is not a big deal, I would make a template out of mdf to the shape and contour of the spare carrier and mount them under the cardboard thing that conceals the spare tire. There was someone on here who has done this b4, I will look for pics for ya.

you take self tapping metal screws and screw the amp to the back of the seat. then replace the screws one at a time with security screws. and theyre there to stay

Just remove everything in the spare tire carrier, make a piece of wood that will fit in there that is about 6 inches deeper than the floor of the truck, and screw your amp's down and run your wires under the carpet. I would go with the rea seat mount if you want a quick semi-clean set-up. I have done it on the rear seats as well. But I was trying to go with a more clean look for you.

heh zeke you couldalways mount them on the under side of your rear deck. that way they are hiddin and plus it gives you an almost 100% hidden pth for the wires

as a matter of fact i was thinking of putting them under the rear deck so good call on that, but still in the spare tire hole also sounds like a pretty good place to put them the only thing is would they over heat if there under there?

I would not think that they would overheat if the amps have good heat sinks, and if you are only powering door speakers, I would not see them getting too hot under any condition.

the trunk is a hot place in the first place. mounting the amps upside down decreases the effect of the heatsink so less heat is being taken away from the internals of the amp. mounting the amp upside down off of the rear deck can cause them to overheat and go into protect (if the amp even has a protection feature) or fry

I didnt even know mounting them upside down would have an effect on the heat. But when I am referring to the spare carrier, I didnt mean mont them upside down. So, maybe on the seat is your best option. My buddy has a 1500 rms amp on the rear seat in his cobolt, and has had no problems! But you can feel the heat in the cabin on the seat in the winter!Haha!

well, I tried to add the picture, but I failed.... If you go to the regionals forum, under the south east forum on page 3, you will see a post call for sale: rock band and other stereo stuff, the post is by eric flint. You can see how he did his amp mount there.

Its bettter on the rear seat that way for a smaller set up like that you still are able to use your trunk. That way if you have groceries rolling all over the trunk you risk messing your amp. Rear seat you don't have to worry.
