Got a 2000 Cavalier here....and I want to wire my new cd player (aftermarket) without a wiring harness. Is it possible...and how would I go about connecting the 12v switched signal. Could I use the cigarette lighter? I want to use something close by the radio because I have such huge hands lol.
I was thinking of using the HVAC Control brow wire. (should I?).....I could just splice the wire from the radio into it right?
Get a fuse tap/"add a fuse"
run a wire down from the radio, under the carpet (or up in the dash, but zip everything up and make sure it doesn't interfere with the steering or anything).
Tap into the wiper fuse, solder the other end of that wire (up at the deck) into the ACC (red) wire.
DON'T CUT THE PLUGS OUT!!!
Go get a wiring harness. You want the newest style of GM plug.
The scosche one is called GM05.
Wire the rest of the deck to that, colour to colour.
I repeat
DON'T CUT THE PLUGS OUT!!!!
Hahah I see how you stress to not cut the plugs out so I won't lol. How would I tap into the wiper fuse?
Could I just use one of these? But what side of the fuse would I use...does it matter?
There is an easier way, it works, but it's probably wrong. I jsut put my wire into the fuse slot and slid my fuse in to keep it there.
I "hard-wired" my deck. I can't gauruntee it, but I think it was orange was the Constant 12v and the yellowr was the switched 12v. Ground was black (duh),
All I had was those 3 wires and I looked at a chart for my speaker wires.

Yes that would work fine, you could wrap it around the fuse too but I find taps are cleaner and more trustworthy.
As far as the side, wire the rest of the deck up first then turn the key on in the ignition.
Take the wiper fuse out and poke the wire that you ran into one side of the the fuse slot.
If the deck powers up, that's the wrong one. (Note: If the deck is an alpine or jvc or some other deck that requires "source" or "On" to be pushed, you'll have to do that to see if it turns on.)
The reason you want the side without power is because you want the deck to pick up power on the other side of the fuse so it's protected.

Will try that as far as the fuse is. But the funny thing is for some reason I decided to look in the trunk of my Malibu...and there was the wire harness from my Alero that got rear ended a couple of weeks ago. Something in my head just kept telling me not to buy a harness. Now all I have to do is take the dash apart and install the new cd player
Thanks so much for your help.
