Help Get My System Sounding Right Please!!

So I finally picked everything out I needed and installed it with a friend. Been in for a month or so now. However, I just can't get the sub to sound quite right. It is kinda hard to explain, but honestly it sounds like a best buy $50 xplod combo. It does produce bass, but it is more the sound of bass, I don't really feel the bass like I should and want to. It mostly just makes noise. It is pitchy, but doesn't boom. It is an amazing setup for rock, but I mostly listen to rap so it isn't satisfying me. I want to feel the bass. Here's what I'm workin with:

-Alpine Headunit (CDA-9885 I think)
-1 12" Alpine Type-R 1242D Sub
-Alpine MRP-M500 Amp (500w wired to 2ohms)
-Cheap Ported Box
-Tuning on amp:
Gain: 5v (Just more than NOM)
Bass: +8db
LP Filter: 80Hz or so
-Tuning on headunit: sub=15/15, bass=2/7, high pass filter doesn't seem to do anything on it
-It is in the trunk, stock battery, no alternator upgrades or anything like that

Now it very well could be, and I hope it is, the box. It is just a crappy $25 deal from the flea market. I don't have a clue to the tuning or any specs on it. I could never get a company to come through and build a custom box for me and I wanted it in the car soon so I went that route. If someone knows of anyone who can build a box for me around $75 or less shipped, I am in. I also might try sealed if you guys think that will give me better response. Can you guys please give me some suggestions as to what I can do? More info such as exact tuning can be provided if needed. THANK YOU ALL

First off...turn your LP filter to around 120Hz, then turn your eq off and go set your gain according the FAQ sticky. Play with the LP and your deck after that...post what happens and then we can see what's needed from there.

id say turn your set the bass on the deck back to default, turn the bass boost of on the amp. tune the amp properly and tell us what you get. i think its probably the box. type r's love small ported boxes and your box probably has to much volume and the port isnt tuned right for the car.

and don't say you couldn't get a company to build you one, i sent you to a few. You couldn't find someone to build something that takes time and skill to do right, in your tiny budget

That's about perfect for a 12" R. Still, you need to go tune your amp the right way no matter what happens.

that box is too big for a type r. you shouldnt go above 1.75 cubes on a ported box for a type R 12.. optimum is 1.7 cubes. just buy a piece of mdf and build a box to the specs

your box is most likley the culprit. the best sub in the wrong box is going to sound like poo as well. get with me, chris has been wanting to co a fiberglass box in his car, we can just take a weekend and build a few boxes at my house. your settings are all over the place. i prefer to keep my lp crossover down in the 75hz and under range, 50 if i can get it, but that really depend on where your midbass is out. it sounds like a bad box mixed with allot of diffrent bass setting trying to compensate for a poor enclosure.

That would be great Jason, I would love to learn to build my own box, but I'd need help for sure. So that would be awesome if we could do that and then you can help me get it tuned better in the new box. Let me know when you wanna do it, as long as its workable with school, I'll be there.
