I have a 2003 Cavalier with the stock stereo with XM (no OnStar). I was wanting to use my iPod directly through my stereo but not loose the ability to have XM radio. So my questions are:
Does the stock XM stereo have the XM built into the head unit, or if I remove the head unit, will I still have the equipment needed to connect to an XM ready stereo(receiver and antenna ready for after market XM stereo like pioneer).
If I leave the stock stereo in place, do any of the adapter cables out there allow you to actually control the iPod from the stock head unit and charge the iPod at the same time?
If I go aftermarket head unit, which brand has the best iPod controls?... Because I had a Sony Xplode stereo in another vehicle and the iPod controls were terrible. It took forever to find the song I wanted(incredibly long load times compared to selecting on the iPod with headphones plugged in), some songs would lock up the entire stereo as well as my iPod(iPod would lock up for days, and the menu-center button reset would not work for 4 or 5 days)
I'm not interested in FM transmitters of any kind. I've had no luck with them and I've tried about 4 different ones. I'd like to keep the stock stereo for now if at all possible, but would be willing to upgrade to an aftermarket head unit if I didn't have to buy all of the extra XM gear to use it. This is going to be an economy stereo setup and I'd like to keep the price as low as possible. ($150 or less)
If I can't do it, I can't do it, lol I'm trying to cheap out but still have XM capability, and be able to listen to my iPod in decent fidelity...

1) No, aftermarket headunits all use their own brand specific xm recievers.
2) No, no adapter cable will let you control the ipod through the stock headunit although some will charge it.
3) the alpine IDA series, and pretty much any touch screen reciever will have god ipod controls.
sad to say but to keep the xm as is you have to keep the stock headunit. to get ipod controls through the headunit (that work well) youll have to go outside your budget (only a little as the apline ida-x300 is only $150) but youd have to buy a satellite module. your best bet would be to buy an inline fm modulator. not one of the ones that are sent through through the air.

An aftermarket deck is certainly a better option for that price.
