deck blew up, "new" deck makes thump noise thorugh subs
Sunday, August 10, 2008 7:57 PM
alrihgt so my alpine deck decided to go up in smoke lastnight... i borrowed a pioneer deck from a buddy of mine and everytime i hit a button on hte deck it makes the subs make a loud thump noise my broken alpine still turns on but no sound out of the speakers or RCA preouts so i beleive the internal amp and output went to @!#$ on it..... could it of ruined my RCA cables, or maybe amp??? im not sure where to start here

i have pioneer deck running to a PG line driver using a PG RCA cable, then a monster RCA cable running from the line driver to my hifonics amp.... when the alpine worked it never made a thiump noise

*EDIT*
i noticed lastnight it only does it when im using teh radio, with cds its fine :S and i also tried grounding out the outside sheild of the RCAs and the body of the deck but that didnt cahnge anything

I don't suppose you somehow got the power-antenna wire from the deck hooked up to something else by mistake? Otherwise I'd be looking for a third deck to try out.

Hands down, Pioneer Decks are giant pieces of crap, and you should throw it in the garbage right now.

Problem is the grounds inside the deck itself are terrible, my gf had a premier in her grand prix, and my god... the subs would PULSATE when there was no sound... Also, if you used the cd, it would pick up the cd spinning and sent it down the rcas... had alternator whine too. I tried putting bigger grounds on everything, got pissed off, and got an alpine, every single problem fixed.

Moral of the story, Pioneer decks belong in the dumpster.

I talked to a couple car audio install guys... they hate pioneer decks for the bad internal grounds, if I had a picture I'd draw how they're made compared to other decks. Pioneer tries to suck people in with flashy pretty blue decks (which is also annoying, because you couldn't turn the random blue blacklight entirely off, just dim it).

But, for the most part, their subs and such are ok on a budget... Just saying, their decks are crap (Due to the grounding issue and the non stop blue issue that blinds you at night on this particular deck). Maybe the older ones were better.

I'm a car audio install guy, and I love pioneer decks.

They had a bad run with the dolphin decks, but the current generations are designed differently. Though I can't say I agree with their knob design. I absolutely love the 980BT.

Try that with the RCAs, cause a if thats the deck you have, that's likely your problem, or at very least I good thing to do while you're poking around.
Other things to try are to ground the deck straight to the frame of the car, and to try a different set of RCAs.

The DEH-1000 I had in my 81 Malibu was a great HU. I used it for a solid 10 years without so much as a hiccup. Before the car was sold out from under me.
