A Particular Problem With Speakers Here...

Hi there =) This is the first time I've worked on the rear speakers of my '02 Cavalier coupe.

I'd recently put two 6.5" speakers in the doors, and they were sounding pretty good. With that, I decided to upgrade the rear as well, so I spent last night tearing the deck off and hooking up one of the newly bought speakers.

Now it doesn't matter which one - old or new - I have hooked up, I get an awful squealing coming from all FOUR speakers, even though the new front and old rear speakers worked fine together. The only things I can come up with are a problem with grounding or with getting power to the speakers, but I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough to know for sure.

I've tightened up the connections to the one rear speaker I've re-installed and am still having problems there, so I'm leaning toward a power issue. Would a lack of power lead to squeaky noises or just poor sound? Front speakers = 180W RMS; rear speakers = 250W RMS; headunit is stock. I realize they aren't likely getting the power they need anyway, but that aside, I don't know if a suitable amp will solve my problem with squealing. Any ideas?

You need to fill out your profile cause I need to know what year the car is.

Is the sound there when the rear speakers are completely disconnected?

lack of power wouldn't cause any of this cause if it did this would happen whenever you turn the volume down.

I agree. Try unhooking the rear speaker's and see if you still have the sound. If you do, then I would check all work you have done in the back... Just my opinion, but I would say a short in the wire where you spliced the factory wiring...

98z24, lowered 2", aem intake, cat-back striaght pipes!, cop ligths in the front and rear, 18" liquid metal's, primer black, tint, full audio and video.

Translation time: Make sure you have the negative speaker wire to the negative side of the speakers. Most likely a short.

I'm going to have to say short on the wire. Disconnect all 4, hook them up one at a time. Switching the polarities wouldn't cause crazy noise. You'd lose bass and it would be awfully quiet.
