aftermarket head unit, now the dimmer doesn't work
Monday, July 28, 2008 11:08 PM
So i had a gift certificate to future shop, so i bought a head unit from them and made the mistake of
having them install it. When i got it back, everything seemed fine, but when night time rolled around
and i needed to turn on the headlights, the head unit stayed on but nothing came out of the speakers.
I played around with the lighting and its effects on the head unit, and found that if the dimmer is turned down while the headlights
are on, the radio will work, but if the dimmer for the dash lights is turned up to an acceptable level, nothing
comes out of the speakers but the head unit shows that its on and playing. I took it back to
future shop and they said that they had no idea what caused it and nothing could be done.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas?

thanks all

I wonder if they hooked an illumination wire from the head unit into the dimmer wire, or vice versa.

Yeah, have them disconnect the orange wire(s) on the wiring harness, and you should be fine.

I've seen it many, many times.... search for my posts with "gray wire" in it... you'll see, it's a common problem with stereo shops that have no clue what they're really doing - beyond the basics, that is.
