How to hardwire a USB port in the car?
Monday, September 22, 2008 6:46 PM
Long story short my car has an input jack, I'm gonna attach mount the iPod dock permanently in the car and leave the dock hooked up to the aux input jack. My question is I need something that plugs into the cigarette lighter to give me a powered USB to plug it in so I can take it apart and hardwire it in.

Have you seen anything that sounds like that?

there used to be a thread on here about this exact thing. which is wat i tried to find. but i can not find it. but it used a 4 port USB hub and they just hacked the USB end off and used the BLACK and RED wires with a resistor to bump it down from 12 volts to 5 volts.

if you pick up one of the dc to usb adapters, instead of taking it apart to hardwire it you could just pick up something like this to make things easier: http://www.myradiostore.com/p/12-volt-dc-lighter-socket-adapter.html
