I DO NOT want the passenger airbag to function but do want the drivers airbag to work only. Can this be done? Or do I have to reconnect my passenger airbag to get the drivers side airbag to work again. My airbag light on the dash is a solid light right now. I am taking a lot of the interior out including the passenger seat.
If I have a passenger I will put them in the back seat.
This is a 98 sedan. I rarely have a passenger and I need the space next to me for more carrying capacity.
Is there any bi-pass switch out there?
GM used to sell a disable switch that worked in the J-cars... but I don't recall the part number. It was pretty expensive...
I used a resistor once to disable the driver's bag but still allow the passenger side to work (had an aftermarket wheel in the car), but I don't recall the resistance I used. Something like 2.2 ohms in a half watt resistor or something like that... there's a thread around here somewhere about it. I'll see if I can find it for ya.

So all you do is put a resistor in the wire going to the disconnected passenger air bag? I hope this will still allow the airbag light to blink 4 times for safety inspections. I have one other concern & that is I pulled a wire tucked beside the left side of the airbag out of that slot and then the dash light stopped blinking 4 times. Do I make this a simple loop circuit with that resistor in the loop?
Sounds pretty easy! Hey you guys got it together! Thanks
It should flash 7 times before it turns off.
Now I'm confused, which airbag are you removing? The passenger side or the driver's? Or both?
Easiest way would be to go a wrecker, grab a set of connectors (for the bag side) and cut the wires off the blown bags, put a resistor in place of the now-missing bag, then plug 'em into your harness.
If you pulled the wire out of the airbag itself on the driver's bag... but you want the driver's bag to still work... then you'll have to repair the wire (if you can get it) or change the bag.

I want to take out the passenger airbag. Actually I want to make it so the passenger side airbag will not work but still have the DRIVERs airbag work.
First off, I would fix the problem with your driver's bag so the system operates properly (light flashes 7 times, then shuts off). Then worry about disabling the passenger side.
Is there a reason you need to remove the bag itself? The resistor method isn't proven to work reliably over a long term... if you're removing the passenger seat, you can leave the bag in and it won't hurt anyone
