what would be my best awg wire to run a set of 6.5" alpine type x components? I should be running around 200rms (clean watts) into the set so 100rms each side, I was thinking 12 awg, what are other opinions?

You could run 24 gauge. Car audio is really low current.

On the other hand, 16 or 18 gauge MIGHT help out with damping, a bit.
If you can fit 12 gauge, go nuts. There's no such thing as too big.

why 14 or bigger? i mean, overkill doesn't hurt with wire, but it's not needed AT ALL for speaker wire.

16-14 is most common, 12 is nice, but no need for that expense.

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

i use 12, always have, no real need for it other then being a bit of overkill.
