first all, just signed up here. i have a 96 cavalier ls 2.4 that ive had pretty much nothing but problems with, and i got my license about a week ago.
title says it all. started off with my HU not opening (aiwa flip out), then it wouldnt get any power at all. turns out i blew the radio fuse. no biggie. i replaced that and my HU still wouldnt open, but had power. So i took it out and broke a clip in the wiring harness. $30 and a some time later i have a new wiring harness. yes. the radio works fine. until starting the car and shutting it off 2 more times, and now it wont open again, and its stuck on a terrible radio station and its pretty loud. to make things worse, i went to pull the car onto the side of my house, and the lights on the gauge cluster wont turn on and the chime that goes off when you turn off the car and the headlights are on wont work.
im guessing the problem with the deck not flipping out is a problem with itself, not the car, but does anyone have any ideas about the cluster lights/the chime?
thanks,
ted.
you got the wrong wireing harness
If you want the chimes you need a different harness. The cluster light is done for, who ever installed the radio cut the back to make it fit. The vibration makes the led go out for some reason, only way to fix it is to take the cluster out and replace it. BTW that radio is done also get a new one....
damnit. the place i got the harness from isnt a sony dealer, so they assured me the jvc? one would work. is there any ways to move the wires around the harness so it lines up with different pins in the back of the deck?
and i still dont understand.. what killed the cluster lights?
im also thinking it might be 1 big problem, because the horn supratically works, and when it does its either normal or sounds like a fog horn.
as for the deck. it opened like 4 times today, then didnt work for a little while, then opened again. when it did it, at least i remembered to put in a good cd and put it at a reasonable volume. so thats not really a problem.
go to a stereo shop and ask them for the wireing harness there should be two of them on will have you keep your factory stereo most people mount it in the trunk but to me that looks tacky i spent a little more for the other harness no problems for me everything works great.

wait, what?
i already got a new harness. that was my problem becasue they gave me a jvc one and i have an aiwa deck (still works, but missing a few features)
and what does mounting it in the trunk have to do with anything?

Huh? To install an aftermarket HU, you DONT need the factory one ANYWHERE in the car. All you need is the proper harness for the car, and wire the HU harness to that.
