98 Sunfire with digital odometer. Can't see odo. I went to NAPA and pikced up part # PC74 and it does not fit. It is a differejnt design and physically bigger. Called two dealers and one said they can program the new speedometer and the other said it can't be done which does not make sense.
I know that the mileage is stored in the cluster on 98 & 99 and stored in the BCm on 00+. Can anyone VERIFY that indeed the new cluster can be programmed to update miles on the new cluster before I buy another cluster?

Digital odo should automatically read correct mileage when you install it. That is my understanding anyway.

on my 99 cavalier i could not see the odometer and it was just the bulb that lights it i changed it and all is good also on my old cluster the odometer would not work i had to push the trip button a couple of time and it would come on. As far as reprograming the new cluster i have no idea i was lucky when i changed mine the mileage was not that far off. In the 98 and 99 with digital odometer the mileage stays the same as in the other car

Where did you get the bulb? I have tried the boneyards and nobody wants to part out a cluster. I went to NAPA and they did not have one that size. The buld and socket are one piece on my cluster. Then the milage is stored in the cluster? The bulb is burned out. It is no different with the bulb in or out so I need a bulb/socket.
I know on 95-99 Cav clusters the odo is lit up by the four bulbs with green sockets, mine's blue right now because of the one on the far right. But if the 95-99 Sunfire cluster is different then you're probably trying to replace the little red socket and bulb which is a #74 I believe.
If I'm completely off base, then go to a junkyard like Pick-n-Pull and pocket the bulb you need, heck grab a few spares while you're there.
Yes, 98-99 digital odo cluster have the mileage stored in the cluster itself.
i got the bulb from a gm dealer the gm part number is 16208443 that`s the one on the box anyways they are not cheap but i got 2 at the time the bulbs are a little different on an digital odometer you have to take the back off to see it but if you already have it apart you already know that. If you already have the bulb out take it to a local gm dealer mine had it in stock good luck hope this helps

I found a 98 with the mechanical odo and plugged it in and it worked but would not start. I know I have to do the pass re-learn to get it to start but my question is this: Can I change the odometer myself without any issues? The speedo is showing about 50 k miles morer than my car has.

Yep you can do it yourself, it's pretty self-explanatory once you get the cluster taken apart.
I don't mean changing the cluster., I mean changing the gears on the odometer. Are they like the older cars where you could simply use a screwdriver to change the milage?
gears? I was talking about swapping the odometers...
You can roll back the mileage but the odo won't work once you do...
I already have the old one out. I wanted to swap to a mechanical ODO as my car has the digital ODO. I wanted to know if I could change the mileage myself on the mechanical without messing it up.
It's pretty easy to do but not legal. You SHOULD take it to a dealer to have it changed. But if you plan on keeping the car FOREVER then you can do this at your own doing and I'm not taking responsibility for your illegal actions.
1.)Pop the odometer out of the cluster
2.)Remove to plastic strip from the backside
3.)Looking at it from left to right, hold the first plastic tab on the backside and physically roll the rest of the odometer till the first number is correct.
4.)Hold the first and second tab and roll the odometer until the first and second numbers are correct.
5.)Continue this until the rest of the numbers are correct.
6.)Reistall and all is good
Pretty easy to do. Watched a friend do it once on a cluster swap.
