18'

Just out of curiosity and my desire to do it some day any have an 18 or larger in their J without building the car to suit it. Pics would be greatly appreciated.

I ran an 18" CV Stroker in my Z24 trunk for quite a while. It wasn't easy.
My suggestion - if you're going to run an 18, build a wall. The rear seat opening is only ~16.5" high or so, which makes it a royal bitch to front or rear fire and not build the box in the trunk. I had to angle the front baffle to the point where I had millimeters between the bottom of the box and the magnet. It BARELY fit, and took alot of tweaking to do so. If you run an 18 with a larger diameter motor, and/or deep mounting depth, front firing will NOT work unless you build the box inside the trunk.

Another downfall of angling the front baffle is that you lose valuable box volume. And in a small trunk like ours, with most 18s needing 5-6cuft+, that's not a good thing. The more you angle the baffle, the more trunk will be taken up to compensate. That leaves less room for batteries, amps, xovers, beer etc.

Easiest way to go about running an 18 in a trunk is to fire the sub up. Some people have had good luck firing subs up, but it didn't work well for me at all. Depends on the setup.

My suggestion - if you want to have a loud trunk setup in a J, go with good dual-12s (which allows you to build adequate port area on the same plane as the subs) or a single 15. You will have much more room to play with, and many more options in terms of firing direction etc. Just my $0.02

I ran our 18" in the back of my Z24 for a while.

I dont have any pictures, but it was sealed and upfiring.

Vented would be tricky as mentioned already.

Haha. Nice I have a 15 already. And that CV Stroker is one weird looking sub. My friend was looking at one for his Camaro. Whats the purpose of the bubble or the cone?

I have the old Stroker, with the yellow spider upper spider and no bubble.
The "bubble" is just a see through dust cap on the new Stroker and Stroker Pro. It covers an upper spider and the adjustable voice coil bias system (adjustable from the pole vent on the back of the sub).

Two 15's in a sunfire for the win! Mine will be sitting in the back seat, however, until I find the time to glass a box for the trunk.

If you were serious about putting an 18 in your trunk, you would have to build your box in the trunk, or at least parts of it. I would recomend glassing the top panel, saves you alot of hassle in the long run. Perhaps make it upfireing on like a idk... 30-40 degree angle towards the front? If the box would be sealed you'd lose some db's but you'll make up for it in the pound you'll get

I was going for two 15s til I did the math and I would have like a foot of trunk and Id have to build the box in and idk how long this car will be around so I dont want to make it permanent. Does anyone really make decent 18s anymore? Pretty much any company I've heard of only makes up to a 15.

Decent 18's are made, however, they are EXPENSIVE. BTL's are about as big as you can go. MTX makes that jackhammer thingy, but that's really just a publicity stunt, it only makes like 140 db or something like that.

There are dozens of awesome 18" subs on the market.
Damn-near every decent manufacturer builds 18s, many in several different model lines. It all depends on what you're after, SQL or SPL.

List of good SPL 18s (very, very abbreviated)
Digital Designs 3518/9518/9918/9918z
Audioque HD3c
Kicker Solo X 18
Incriminator DP
Atomic APX/APXX
American Bass VFL
RD Audio HW/SHW
T3 TSNS
Soundstream XXX
RE MT
FI BTL
Shocker Sig (they come and go, not sure if they're still selling on ebay)
DC Audio level 4/5
Anything Cactus

And the list goes on.

If you're looking for something more SQ oriented:
RE XXX (old or new models)
Exodus Maelstrom
Ascedant Audio makes several models, SPL and SQ/L
Soundsplinter
TC Sounds made several models (have to be used)/Audiopulse
Mach5 IXL or MJ

And that list goes on as well.

It all really depends on what you want (SQ or SPL) and the power you plan on running. But you have a TON of choice when it comes to 18s. And not all are expensive.

There is also a problem running 2-15s. Well, two problems actually.
The first problem is space. We don't have a pile of it in our trunks, so it really depends on the sub. I was running two DD 9515s in a bastard box, just not enough space for a daily setup in the z24. And I'm currently ALOT louder with my single 9515 setup than I was with both (both 150.1s now strapped to the single 95, rather than one per sub).
Second problem has to do with ports and firing direction. Our trunks are only ~36" wide, so firing 2-15s forward or backward leaves next to no room for proper port area on the same plane as the subs.

IMO, our trunks are ideal for single 15 or dual 12 setups. Dual 15s and single 18 setups are much more difficult, and the results (at least in my experience) have been far from optimal due to the space restrictions we have.

Well said.
18's are fun to do if you like to work (and the rewards are high if you are able to tune it in properly).. but again it is mostly about work and the project itself. The trunk does not lend much tolerance to folded horn designs, so true high efficiency is out the door, anyhow.
For SQ and cosmetic integration, you are probably best off with a single 10 or 12, imho. A decent, well-selected 8 will even suffice in most cases where SQ is the main goal (but the 8 will lose some serious dynamic headroom over the 10/12).
If you want gads of bottom end and you can afford the space, get a pair of 12's.
The bottom line on bass is how well you design and assemble the parts so If you plan realistically and take your time designing, practical and innovative application nearly always trumps size and power.

Having never heard of BTL, I have no idea how large they are.
That said, I might add that in the 80's I tuned 24" and 30" EV sub-woofers in two vans.
25 watt RMS each.. ridiculous output. I have always like McCauley (I had to mention them because I did not see them mentioned)

I was thinking of trying to fit 2 or 3 15s in the backseat area with the back seat removed. In a ported box sitting inverted forward firing if I get the money to do it. Im pretty sure it's doable.

Like include the trunk into the box? I was talking a box built in place of the seat so the trunk is still usuable space.

you could throw 4 elemental designs 18's in ya car, i know for a fact you can get 10-12 cubic feet in the back seat area, would be a fun project to build

i had my car walled off you can get bigger than 10 or 12 cubes but you have to build it inside the car.

I wasn't planning on sliding a box that big in through the door. I just want it to be seperate of the car.

I think I've seen that in a different thread. Nice setup. I want something like that but with a 45 degree mount surface for the invert mount.

So let me get this straight. You want to be able to use your trunk, but not your backseat? =P
