toggle switch madness!!!

Can someone give me a diagram on how to hook up a toggle switch? I am trying to hook up a positive and a negative to a toggle switch, and I keep melting my darn wires! I dont know if this is enough to go on but let me know and I will let you know more on what is going on...

Are you hooking a positive to one side and a negative to the other? Cause if you are my friend youre creating a dead short and making heat because theres no fuse so therefore melting your wires. Take the power wire of whatever youre toggling and put the switch between the power (battery) and the thing to be toggled. And ground the thing to be toggled.

depending on what your gonna use the switch for i would fuse the power line and toggle the ground, that way you should have to use a relay. (depends on what your gonna power up)

Its ok. Everybody has to learn sometime. It took me and my cousin 4 hours to hook up floodlights on his truck when it shouldve taken like one and it probably would be a good idea to fuse the power wire close to the battery too protect the lights in case of a short.

Ok, am I missing something? I wired the toggle from the strobes with a positive and a negative, then ran the positive back to the battery and grounding the negative on the toggle. It is still burning the wires? What am I doing wrong?

You dont hook a ground to the toggle just power on one end and power and the other. Run your power wire from the battery to the strobe. cut the power in two and wire the switch in the hole. And you don't need to toggle the negative or anything just run it to the chassis. Should work. If you still are having problems post me some pics of what you got and I'll try to help out the best I can. Its an easy concept to get once you do it once.
