First Alarm Install
Thursday, October 30, 2008 4:11 PM
Long story short...I've never installed an alarm before, and I'm looking for any hints/tips/suggestions to help me do this. I already have the wiring diagram that I got from the12volt.com. I have an 03 cav.

I have a Viper 5002, with a 506T audio sensor, a hood pin switch, and a 515R Battery Backup Siren. I don't have remote start, there's no power windows or doors, but my car does have the trunk release button. Here's my list of questions:

1) What's the best place to put the mic for the 506T in my car, or any 2dr car for that matter? Also to set the sensitivity, does tapping keys on the window really work that well (like indicated in the instructions)?

2) Can I just splice my second siren (the 515R) in with my main siren when I hook it up? (I was thinking one under the seat, one in the engine bay).

3) How do I set the shock sensor; ie, is there a given methodical way to do it? Or do I just play with it til I think it's good?

4) What's the best way to tap into my car's wires, connection-wise? Vampire clamps, butt splices, crimp caps, t-taps, etc.? I know soldering would be optimal, but I'm not sure I want to spend that much time under my dash in one day.

5) In the near future I will be adding power locks (524t) to my car...how easy is it to tie them in if the alarm is already installed?

6) The wiring diagram I got for my car from the12volt.com says that my trunk release (-) is at the actual switch in the trunk. I'm guessing this is just a normal ground like any other cause the button is just a simple momentary pushbutton switch. So then I can just ground out this lead at the brain, correct?

7) How do I wire up my hood pin switch? A quick wiring diagram would be great. It's a normally closed spring loaded switch if that helps (ie, it's tripped when the loop is completed...i think that's normally closed, it's been a while).

Sorry it's a long list, but I'd rather gets options/opinions before I start this. I do have a friend who is a professional installer and does alarms like there's nothing to them, so I'll be picking his brain too. Unfortunately he's never available to actually help with installs.

Thanks a lot in advance guys.

here you go ill give you a little rundown. But you really should look into actuators for the power locks. Its just so much easier.
1. You may not like that audio mic. Im assuming its a glass break sensor? windy nights and such can set it off if you cant get it just right. nothing like your alarm going off in the middle of the night to scare the hell out of you. I would put it somewhere central in the vehicle maybe up by the dome light?

2 yes you can do that but the battery backup siren should have its own trigger off the brain of the alarm. Im not quite sure on that though. its been awhile

3 you can set it put it where you want and then kick the tire. Depending on how hard you kick the tire will tell you how hard of a shock it takes. Ive also seen people hit the a pillar with a solid closed hammer fist. (meaty part of your hand) if you do that please dont be a jack ass and wail on it. It shouldnt take much to set it off and i dont want to hear you say you dented your car by hitting it.

4 solder them! you will be grateful you did. It really doesnt take all that long under the dash most of your time will be spend on the bench doing prepwork. A good prep will save you tons of time under the dash.

5 it is not hard at all to tie them in. should take 20 mins to wire them up to the door lock relay you will have to buy then plug it in to the brain

6 your trunk release may require a relay for it to work properly. im not sure right now.

7 there should be a wire for the hoodpin trigger off the brain its just one wire. installation of the hood pin is crucial though. make sure its stable and just right.

for real, i just got my suburban for $650 because it "wouldent start" The jackass that put the alarm in used but splices. And the starter disable wire going to the relay came undone........

Lol @ the suburban owner...that's one of the first things I'd check.

Thanks for the input so far.

1) For the mic, what about under the center part of the dash where the HVAC controls are? It's open under there cause that's where my ipod cable is running down from.

2) I talked to DEI today and they said that the brain may be able to run two sirens at full volume, but the best bet is to just test one, then test both and see which way you want to set it up. As far as I remember from when I briefly looked at the diagrams for the brain, I only remember seeing one siren output, but I'll know for sure on Monday when it gets here.

4) Looks like I'm soldering them then, lol

5) The brain is supposed to have built-in door lock relays already...I don't need another one do I?

6) What relay would be needed if that's the case...has anyone wired up the electronic trunk release before with a brain that already had a dedicated trunk out (mine does, I also remember seeing that on the diagram, too)?

7) This wire is positive...correct? I know there's a wire from the brain...I remember seeing that on the diagram I was looking at the other day.

a simple relay for the trunk release im pretty sure its positive off the brain although if they have built in relays for the door locks now they may have done that i havent done an alarm in a long time. the hoodpin should be positivie. when the hood is closed it pushes down the pin when opened it will show a signal to the brain. the mic could probably go under the hvac too.

If you put a relay on the siren you'll be able to run zillions of them. Second, instead of a shock sensor, get a dual zone microwave sensor. Anyone comes close to it, there's a warning chirp. They come even closer, alarm goes off.

I looked at all the wiring diagrams again and I figured out the hood pin...it's negative, but w/e.

For the trunk release, I took a look and I shouldn't need any relay at all...it's a simple momentary pushbutton spst switch that I should be able to splice into with no problem...my install buddy said it should work fine. If I need to I can always add a relay later.

I'm putting in the shock sensor cause it's part of the alarm already. I plan on adding either a dual zone sensor and/or a tilt sensor in the near future, but I wanted to keep my first install relatively simple and I really don't have the extra cash quite yet.

What kind of relay would I need to hook up both sirens if I do end up needing one?

Single pole double throw. 87 + 12, 85 -, 86 to + siren from your remote start, 30 to the sirens.

Thanks Lanman, I'll pick one up later today. And I was wrong about needing a relay for my trunk...my brain has a (-) output, and my trunk wire is a (+) wire...so ill pick up an extra one for that.

youll be amazed at how many of those wires you wont use though. youll use like 15 of them alot of them are for stuff most people have no need for like window rollup and down sunroof etc. thats why a good prep is key.

And that's why I'm taking all this week to get everything figured out, cause once I start installing this, the car is NOT moving til it's done...good thing I don't have anywhere to be this weekend

Okay, what's the easiest way to get to the wires in the driver's kick panel and the ignition harness? Should I just remove my lower dash on the driver's side (and in turn the upper dash and the bezel around the radio)?

Also, where's the best place to put the brain since it has the shock sensor in it? Should I mount it to something under the dash?

you want your brain where if someone breaks in they are not going to find it quickly and be able to unplug it or cut it to shut it off. i actually unplugged my harness from the column when i did mine for those wires and pulled it down through the bottom. for the kick panel you just remove the kick panel and remove enough of the tape that you can easily test each wire then tape it back up when you are done.

Just a piece of advice...

I have subs, and amps in my trunk that I really didn't want stolen, so along with my brain being pretty darn hidden, I altogether removed the trunk pop button.... and my sub box is waaaaaaaaay to big to come out the back seat. So the only way to open the trunk is with the key fob for my alarm, or with a key.

Just a thought if you keep anything expensive in your trunk.
