Hey guys I just bought a 2000 sunfire and I am wanted to upgrade sound. I already have a premium aftermarket pioneer head that I'll be using. What 4x6's and 6x9's do you guys rec? I cant really find any good 4x6's that will fit in the doors or atleast crutchfield says they wont fit. I want some 6x9's that hit hard and have good low bass to as I dont want to add a sub and weight. What do you guys suggest? I was kinda looking at infinity 6x9s but I dont know. Help me here guys?
Upgrade to Some 5 1/4" 6 1/2" for your front door instead of going with 4x6's. Or if you wouldn't mind amping some speakers, get a pair of components.
will those size speakers fit in the doors? I figure they'll be cutting involved right?
I THINK (don't get me right) on some model speakers yes. But you can make a adapter plate out of MDF board or search ebay, I know a guy on there sells adapters.
no cutting, just need to make some spacers...half inch work well

yup and it will sound much better than 4x6's
What kind of budget and what kind of know-how or technical ability to learn do you have? There are so many different ways you could go. I would suggest getting some 6.5 inch speakers up front with some MDF baffles. Like Linhiv said, .5" should be plenty to keep it from hitting the window, and give it something solid to mount to. As far as getting good bass out of your 6X9's without going to an amped sub setup, it is possible.
The ideal way to do this on a decent budget, in my opinion, would be to get some half decent 2-way coaxial 6.5" speakers in the front, some 6X9 midbass speakers, or 6X9 subs in the rear (they do make them. They aren't ideal, but you CAN get halfway decent bass out of 6X9s), and getting a 4 channel amp. High pass the fronts, low pass the rears. Not Ideal, but on a budget, and for not wanting subs, it will get the job done. I am just realy wanting to steer you away from upgrading speakers that will most likely want more power to perform their best, and running the crappy head unit power to them.
A decent quality 4 channel amp can be had at a decent price too. This would give you enough extra power for a set of coaxial speakers:

And an Idea of the kinds of 6X9's you might want to consider(I don't recomend a full range rear speaker playing highs out back. No need for that with a decent set of full range speakers up front):

http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3077
AND,(I am not a huge Cadence whore usualy but...) I can say first hand, that if you give these the power they want, there is not going to be a single better sounding set of speakers under $100. These are a great deal and really soung great. I LOVE the tweeters in this set of componentes:
http://www.cadencestore.com/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=126&idproduct=194
And in the same section of the website, the next 4 channel up from that one is only $50 more and double the power per channel.
So just counting speakers and an amp, if you were to go with the quick recomendations I made, you are only looking at spending $367 shipped. Then add on another 30-50 for wiring and such and you have a damn good sounding setup for a damn good price.
This just my recomendation for your situation. I could sit here and say all day long "get a 2 channel amp, some front components, a mono amp and a sub." But honestly, if you really don't want to go that rout, and are happy with just the 4 speakers, this is a nice cheap way to do it.

Wow man Thank you for timing the time to do that! I greatly appreciate it and it looks like a nice setup for the right amount of money too!
Yeah you'll definitely want to go with a set of 5 1/4's for the fronts. I have Alpine Type S's and they sound great. The setup above looks pretty good as well.
i just gotta wait till the TXA-6004 comes back in stock now!
Good thinking on going with the amp that has plenty of power to spare. Gives you more than enough to keep your speakers happy, and gives you room to upgrade down the road.

Ok I just spoke with Cadence about this amp and they said they dont know if they'll be stocking anymore of them! What amp would you rec. for me now? I want one with close to the same power as the TXA-6004 if I could and around the same price if possible.
Dont mean to thread jack but......Hey JL quick question, i want some mid bass also...(my infinity comps just arnt doing it for me) Would you put the amp on Full or Low pass?
To the OP, check out this
amp its a hifonics not as much power as the other amp but its close....
hifonics amps have a tendancy to be a bit less efficient and over rated by a little bit, in my experience. They may have changed recently, but that is just my experience with them in the past.
BUT, as far as you question illdwes, What are you looking for? Meaning you just want to put some 6X9 midbass speakers in the back? If you are doing that I would lowpass them definitely. No need to send the full spectrum of sound to a speaker that will be struggling to play anything over 150hz.
Alright I was searching for similar deals and sales on amps, and Jacob at Cadence got back with me. For a little extra cash ($249.00 and Free Shipping) you can get the Cadence ZRS 9004. It is 90watts RMS per channel at 4ohms, and is their higher end amp over the TXA's. I can guess that they are clearing out the TXA's because they were a quality amp that put out more power per dollar than I have seen most amps go for. Their FX series is their low end stuff to sell to the cheap asses lol, and the ZRS and Daytona amps are their far better high end amps. If you are willing to penny up for a better amp, the ZRS amps are definitely something to consider.
Like I said the ZRS 9004 is $149.00 from them and they also have a ZRS 1004 which gives you 100x4 rather than 90x4. I don't know their direct price on that though. Their ZRS amps come with a 2 year factory warranty directly through them also.
Another band to look into is Soundstream. I have always seen good things from them. Great prices on their amps. Unfortunately the sale price on the TXA amps is not something you come by often, so you might end up spending more money to get a good 4 channel putting out decent power, than I originally calculated with theTXA amps.

I just bought a Hifonics ZXi 8408 - Hifonics 880W 4-Channel Amplifier for $190 but I got the speakers you listed from Cadence! What size wire should I run from the amp to the speakers? What about the size for the power and grounds to the amp?
I would get a 4gauge amp kit that comes with speaker wire, or if it doesn't come with speaker wire, just get a roll of 14 gauge speaker wire.

JLaudio,
Thank alot for all the help you have given me in this post! Its been greatly appreciated!
not a problem. So did you end up going with the Cadence Midbass 6X9s and the CWM components?

yep I got the cadence mid bass drivers and 6.5" components!
Dustin I haven't seen CVLW-69 here in Canada....are those like a entry level brand? As some on this site know I run clarion, so thats why when I saw the speakers he was going to use I was amused as I havent seen them before

I wouldn't consider Cadence an entry level brand. They DO have some lower end or entry level stuff, just like most brands, but they also have quite a few very nice products. I can say first hand that their ZRS and TXA amps are a hard value to beat. The CWM-6kit components are unbeatable for their quality and price. The 6X9 Midbass drivers that I have mentioned, that you are asking about, are going to be about as good as a 6X9 midbass speaker gets in most price ranges. They don't offer a whole lot in that size, as any big audio guy knows that running rear speakers is rare in a good sound setup, and if they do, they aren't simply replacing the rear 6X9's lol. But some companies do understand that most people don't want to lose trunk space, but still want a little better sound out of using the factory locations, so Cadence and CDT and very few other brands have looked for a good middle ground between the person who knows not to put high frequencies behind their head, and people who still want the stock 4 speaker set up, with the 6X9 midbass drivers.

Where should I mount the tweeters?
Oh yeah I've done some reading and come up with this. I finally found out why the previous owners had the factory head unit moved to the trunk when they had there new one installed. I was wondering hardcore why that was until just a few minutes ago. my car has an aftermarket CASSETTE head unit in it already with the T harness thing for the relocation deal. Well that one is gotta go, So can I use the switched 12 volt power they are using or not? Whats a good harness adaptor to install in place of the T harness? Scorshe? Can you get it at like walmart?
