I've got a Kenwood KDC-X592 HU in the car. So far, it's awesome. Mp3 Playback, cds, beautiful sound. see it
here.
It plays USB thumb drives without a hitch, but I went and plugged my WD Passport 120GB USB Drive to it and it comes up flashing "Overcurrent" on the HU screen. Now, I've already went and persistantly researched this & it appears that the 500mA of current that the HU pushes through the usb is insufficient for the 650mA HD. From reading further into miscellaneous forums & websites, I've concluded that the HD simply is insufficiently powered. I've seen others online with my same issue who have resolved it using a USB "Y" type cable for extra power from thier accesory outlet.
My question is...
Is it likely to work or is it a waste of time?
I went & purchased a Y cable of my own (was a pain to find) & a converter with a USB out for the extra power. When it arrives I'll let you guys know the results.

I did this with my x591 except my hard disk was ac powered and i just used a converter.
Also the x591 ( 1 year older) will only read up to 999 tracks. so really a 8gb flash drive would prolly reach the capacity of the headunit.
i should say it had a ac to dc converter, not ac powered. So I converted from DC to AC back to DC lol
120 gb thumb drive, now that would be nice. i wonder if i could do something similar with that external IDE case i have sitting at home...
