Just a few simple questions about HID's to clear things up..
Friday, November 21, 2008 2:27 AM
Hey guys, i am interested in getting some HID's for my 2005 Pontiac Sunfire, i was just wondering if those $50-$80 ebay ones are going to work and last awhile..

Now i have H11's as low beam a H9's as High Beam, can i just take the 2 H11's out and put the HID H11's in along with the ballists?

I dont have any kind of projector lense or bezel and i was wondering if i can adjust my lights so that they dont point straight into on coming car drivers' eyes, and will my HID's still look good without those projector lenses.

Finally, i am confused about the "relay". What is a relay? I know that i will have to disable my Day-Time Running Lights but i can just cut a wire to do that, but what does a relay do?

Thanks!!

Stick with halogens. Cheap ebay parts = cheap junk.

I'm not familiar with the housings out there for late Sunfires, but the general rule is that eBay-offered projectors are low-quality. They're even sketchier if you want to run HID bulbs. The best results are had by using the projector unit out of an OEM application like a Mazda TSX and custom fabricating them to fit housings for the Fire.

HID kits from eBay can be dodgey, but will probably be ok. Some may flicker or fail prematurely, so a more reputable vendor may be desireable. A lot of the more expensive HIDs are just heavily marked-up kits that come from the same place. Do NOT run HID bulbs in stock "reflector" housings, even though it's possible and easy. Proper projectors have a defined "cut-off" at the top of the beam that can be aimed effectively to save oncoming traffic from being blinded. Reflectors don't have this ability.

A relay, or a "relay harness", allows a dedicated connection the battery to power the lights. HID power demands are borderline for the existing headlight harness, and can cause a range of problems. A relay uses the power from the existing harness wiring only as a "signal" to switch on the lights, and the power that lights them runs through the separate wire run.

I have bought and Installed 3 of the Ebay "$79.99" kits and I personally Love them. They are actually are of better quality than the Mazda OEM HID Kit I modified and used in my Fogs.

Cool.. Hmm can you guys post a link or tell me the seller of those $79.99 HID kits so I can get one too? Also do you guys have the projector lenses retro fitted in your housing? Or are you guys running the lights without them?

Thanks guys

Semi reviving this thread but here's a link to a thread I had about building some retro fitted projectors for my car. Theres some decent info in there along with a link to a thread by locdizzle, who built some projectors for an 03 Fire I believe.

Clicky

is a good site to get agood HID kit off of that is of good quality. I just received mine a couple days ago, yet to install it. A buddy of mine bought Bi-Xenon Model for his neon and has had it installed in his car for over a year without any problems. looks great. The kits are inexpensive and the replacement ballasts and bulbs that are also available through them are also inexpensive. they have a 14 month warranty on their products and even if anything goes after that the replacement parts are affordable to replace. Fast shipping from these guys too, only 6 days including over the weekend and it arrived at my door.
