40" of bass

My question is:

If we're talking about a generic decent sub, like a Kicker CVR; assuming they boxes are made equally well, and equally amplified, would say, 5-8" subs be louder than 2-12"? I know we're talking about 16" more cone, but I just wasn't sure with the nature of 8 inch "subs". I know the 8s can't hit quite as low, but for just general rap bass. Thanks a lot. If it makes a difference, assume it's in say, an SUV, not a J-body.

8"s have come along way. In my new daily driver I'll be running two 1508 Digital Designs on about 1200 watts. (yes they will take it) I anticipate them to do a low 140.

I've seen a wall of 6x9's hit 160. It can be done.

Look up how to figure cone-area because your doing it wrong.

I heard 3 DD 8's in the stetsom demo car and it was pretty nice. but i would go with 12's cause i dont think the cone area difference makes up for the wiring of 5 subs.

let me rephrase it, if you weren't looking at them, only listening, would you be able to tell (minus to low low low ends) that you're listening to 5-8" , rather than say 2-12"? would it be a whole different kind of bass?

I would say so, 8 inch subs are going to sound much tighter and be louder at higher frequencies than 12's which will be loud in the lower range . I can tell quite a difference between a 10' and a 12' or a 12' and a 15' so to answer your question yes.

I guess it's tough to be definitive without hearing it for yourself, but where the hell am i going to be able to listen to 5-8"? lol.

Fisrt off, I had 4 8W7's in my car. They sounded the same as my 12W7's. The boxes were tuned the same.

The 4 8s were louder due to the fact I had them facing into the trunk and the 12's were facing the front and never got sealed from the trunk so it was cancelling out.

Anyway. Which ever speaker set up you go with that ACTUALLY has more cone area and moves the most air will be louder.

example, A JL AUDIO 10" woofer has in the area of 54sq. inches

A JL AUDIO 15W3 woofer has around 150 sq. inches of cone area.

So 4 10's would not be enough to compare to 2 15's. it would take about 6 tens to equal the same amount of cone area.

ALSO, it gets even MORE COMPLICATED.

Usually a Larger Subwoofer has a Longer cone travel. And some woofers move further based on their individual design.

Example.

I have a 13.5inch W6 in my Daily Driver.

Even though it is BIGGER in cone area than a 12W7, they move the Same amount of air. One 13W6v2 is equal to a 12W7 in the amount of output becasue even thought the 12 is smaller, it moves further.

ALSO, if mounting your subs in the box is going to be SIDE BY SIDE, the most you can do in a Straight box is

4 8's
3 10's
2 12's
2 15's

You have about 35" of space between the trunk arms.

Thanks for that last post, very informative. I have another post here about the recent work I've done to my car, it may show you a little better where I'm planning on putting them if i did it. I'm not sure I get your math on cone area though..is it not just the simple area of a circle? (Pi)(Radius)^2?

So area of a 10" sub being (3.14) times (5)squared, or 3.14x25= 78.5in^2?
Even still you're right about say, two 10"s, being a total of 157 in^2, not being as loud as one 15, or 176 5/8 in^2

Or is that not how car audio works?

In subwoofers, a 10" woofer for example is not what they go by. 10" is the frame size. They only measure the part of the Cone that moves air. Also depending on the style of woofer, flat, concave, etc and how wide the surround is, woofers can vary in cone area from company to company.

Some companies tell you how much cone area you have with their subs. JL for example.
