question about tuning a amp (i read sticky)
Tuesday, December 23, 2008 7:50 PM
Welllike it says i want to know since you take the rms power times the ohms and then square root that to get what your should set your gain at. i want to set a amp that has twice the rms rating a sub has but dont want to blow the sub, could i take the rms power that the sub handles and do the same method of tuning the amp so that im only getting the rms i need and not the rms the amp can put out?

ok here is a example.
subwoofer is 800 rms power handling dual 4 ohm
amp is 1500 rms power at 2 ohms
could i just take the 800 * 2= 1600 then 1600^.5 to get 40 ac volts and then the amp will be at 800 rms approximatly

so i read the stick and decided not to post it up there because i didnt think many people post up there.

Thanks,

Anton Miller

Problem - your amp does 900 watts at 2 ohm, not 1200. That's if you're still using the bamf 2000/1

your math is right, and if the amp claims to put out clean power at 1500 watts it should most definitely put out clean power at 800 watts easily.... unless its a pyrmid or pyle amp.....

thats the thing i cant find the amp that hes running, its a 3500 watt mono power acoustik amplifier, i cant find one out there the closest is the silver series 3400 mono but idk. hes a total noob and has no clue what hes doing and im just helping him get his stuff hooked up right to begin with. so since its 3500 mono i assumed at 2 ohms it would be around 1500 watts (just from they're other amps) but i really have no clue until he messages me back with the model number.

again thanks for your help

I'm betting that it's 3500 watt max @ some god awful voltage and THD. I'd check first to see exactly what the amp is first before I'd start tuning Merry Christmas Anton.
