Ok, I need some help. I know very little about car audio electronics.
I will set the story........Over the course of the year I had always said around my father-in-law that I wanted to get an aftermarket stereo for my 2000 Cavalier Z-24 but really did not know which way to go.
After talking to several people, they all suggested a Pioneer deck, so that is what I was going to get, eventually, until this Christmas.
My father-in-law bought me a Jensen HD5112 Cd Receiver. Now I know that this is certainly not the "top of the line" car receiver. Whats funny is that he listened to EVERYTHING I had said that I wanted in a deck, USB or SD for MP3 was my biggest desire, keeping in mind that this gentlemen is know in my city as "Mr. Flathead" because he builds street rods. He is VERY good with the old Ford Flatheads and all the "older" cars.
Now with that in mind, Jensen was BIG for those types of cars, at least that is what he said. I just do not have the heart to tell him this will not work for what I wanted, at least I don't think it will....this is where I need some help.
I am not looking for the "BIG BASS" I just want something that I can feel a little. I have an option to purchase 1 12" Pioneer sub in a custom box. I have heard this and it sounded perfect for what I wanted. I am ordering Kicker 6 x 9's and Kicker 4 x 6's to compliment the sound.
Will this deck work if I were to purchase an AMP? Or am I just out of luck? If so, what do you recommend? I have all the specs of this receiver, and what concerns me the most is that it does not have the option that Pioneer has which I think is called the High Pass/Low Pass option.
Please remember, I know VERY little about car audio but I know I want something I can feel, but not the car next to me if you know what I mean.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chad
That deck will work fine as far as a radio goes.
It's got quite a bit of functions for a hundred bucks.
As for the Sub, you will need an amp. The radio has pre-amp outs (the blue and white component connectors) so you're set there, you just have to get an amp wiring kit (has everything you need to hook up the amp).
You can wire the Kicker speakers into the stock wires and you should be fine. You can amp them, but it gets into a mess and since you claim to be a new to audio I wouldn't recommend it. If you get the sub though, you will have to have an amp (can't run a sub off the deck).
Hey thanks for the advice.
As I said before, I know Jensen is not top of the line but "back in the day", they were pretty good.
I just was not sure if this deck had the correct options to even hook a sub up or not but you answered that. How big of an Amp do you think?
I am told that the sub is 500watts, if that sounds correct.
Again, I am not looking for big bass just for it to "hit", if that makes sense.
Last question, are kickers good for my 6 X 9 and 4 x 6 or should I go with Pioneer. If so, what model? And you think that with this deck only being 160 watts that will be good enough for those? As you stated, you are right, I don't want to get to involved with this, but I absolutely hate to do things more than once. I spent some time looking on the internet about how to take the factory deck out of my cavalier and I did not have to much luck but that is the least of my concerns.
Thanks so much for your response.
the 160w rating is the max output. and i would think that by the time that HU actually hit 160, it would pop shortly thereafter. the constant output is actually 13x4 (52w). that would be good enough for factory speakers, but not really much more.
car audio noob since 1984.
kickers are better than the pioneer. i have all polk speakers except my kicker sub and they are great. the deck should work fine if it has pre amp hook ups on it.
