I removed my cig lighter a few years back for a Volt Gauge
I have a 12 V power source running into the car that i use to hookup my Power Inverter so that isnt a problem getting power
Question is
The adapters that plug into the cig lighter to plug in such things as
GPS and Cell phone chargers
Can i just splice in the style of connector i have for my 12 V source or do these units need to be powered from the Bigger plugin the goes into the cig lighter? Or can i just cut it off and splice in my connector?
Thanks for any help
If I understand you correctly, you don't really need the cig lighter plug to connect your accessories. You can splice in your connector of choice, but I'd properly fuse the circuit for the anticipated load to avoid any unwanted smoke.
How about the operating voltages of the device?
I noticed on my Sirius cig plugin that the Input Voltage is 9-16 V but the Output voltage is only 5.2V
solder to the plug itself
ground on the sides, positive on the tips
Yes the adapter plug is a step down transformer so cutting it off is NO
You could always buy a 12volt socket and solder that to your 12V wires that you use to have your cigarette lighter plugged into. Then plug your Sirius adaport into that behind the dash bezel and run the wire to your Sirius.
I use these 12Volt sockets (similar to the one pictured) and I run an IGNITION wire and ground it, then whatever the customer wants powered on (radar detector, sat radio, nav etc.) only turns on when the car is on.
That is how I do it all the time.
Dont cut them off, your cell phone for example uses less than 12v....
I would just splice in some lighter plugs from an autoparts store and put them behind the dash or something and just have the plugs coming out if you really want them hidden...or just put the mounting holes somewhere where they cant be seen

12v ---> Sirius radio = dead radio. gotta use the adapter it comes with, it steps the voltage down to 5v. Similar situation with most if not all cell phone chargers.
