few questions on ohms wiring and etc
Sunday, January 04, 2009 12:42 PM
i have a amp that is 1400watts. i have 2sets of spl tweeters2spl4x6 and 2spl6x9s....with an audiobahn 400watt rms 12inch sub in ported box.right now im only using three channels.when i first got the system i didnt put it in myself due to me having little knowledge of car audio. but i have a better understanding now. i bought the new speakers that i listed in the beginning but the sub is still from the first install. i looked up my sub and it says its a dvc or dual 4ohm sub that can be wired to 2 ohms or 8ohms. i know when i bridge them on the amp it heats up and goes into protection mode. im trying to figure out if i wire the speaker to 8ohms will that be less on the amp making it to where im able to bridge it for more power. i just cant get the understanding of ohms just yet. from what im trying to understand is that the less ohms you have like 2 or 1 is more power and the more you have like 4 or 8 is less power. not sure but thats what im thinking. im my subs as of now arent wired in any certain way but straight back to the amp on one channel that powers it fine untill i bridge it to hit harder. so i just keep it on its one channel for now. im also thinking about just getting a 600watt mono amp. and if i do that. how would i hook them up together as far as my 4ch powering my 4x6s and 6x9s. and the sub having its own amp. i also have dimming headlights. i know about the big three but not necessarily understanding how to hook it up or should i just go out and get a farad cap and calll it a day. in which i wouldnt even know how to hook that up either lol. help me out peoples please. i have a few more questions but dont wanna type all those untill i get these answers. by the way my car is a 99z24coupe.

yes you need to wire it to 8 ohms. but what is your amp's specs? and im thinking if thats a 4 channel your overpowering the 4x6's and 6x9's but im not sure..... but if you hook the rear 2 in a channel and the front 2 in a channel then wired your sub to 8 ohms and bridge the other two channels you should be fine.

i think thats how they are. matter of fact i think the left side is hooked to one channel and the right side is hooked to a channel. the 6x9s are 300watts dont know the rms. the amp specs are=4ch mosfet 2ohm stable power amp. it also has a button wher you can change it from a 4ch amp to a 2ch amp. so how do i wire it to 8ohms...i mean i know but do i like cut the insulation from the middle of one of the wires and attach it there. i need a visual of how it would look if someone could do that for me. i might just buy another amp for my sub

1400 watts doesnt sound right on a 4 channel amp. does it say how much power per channel on the amp?

Wire each of the subs coils to a channel instead of bridging it.

yea the amp says its 1400. im not sure what it puts out on each channel. so wire each voice coil to a channel. ive never heard of that. what would wiring each coil to a channel do as far as power and pefprmance. do i still wire it to 8 ohms if i do this

It would be 4 ohm per coil if you do it the way I said.

yea you could wire each coil to the amp and not wire them together.

i just wired the sub to 2ohnm and it sounds good. i still cant bridge it without it over heating though

Yeah, most 4 channel amps aren't 2 ohm mono stable, so wire it like i said before something catches fire.

well its not bridged. its only wired for 2ohms on one channel unbridged. if i bridge it thats when it heats up

speak clearer English, space out your rants better, take people's damn advice... Let me break this down to you how your amp works, Lanman is trying to explain it, but it might just take my annoyed attitude and flat out bunt ass explanation...

You have a 2 channel amp that you are trying to power a single 4ohm DVC sub with.(I think... I really couldn't understand a damn thing you said in your first post, and if you can't put the effort into making it legible, I'm not putting the effort into deciphering it. )

WHEN BRIDGED A TWO CHANNEL AMP IS ONLY STABLE DOWN TO 4 OHMS.

You have these options:
1. Wire it to 8 ohms and use the designated terminals to bridge the amp. You get a lot less power this way because you are presenting a large load for the available power.
2. Wire it to 2 ohms and put it to a single channel of the amp. You are getting the same amount of power as running it 8ohms bridged, because now you are using the maximum available power, but only from half the amp.
3. Wire each coil to each channel. This is the safest way to get the most power. You are still only getting approximately half of the available power, but if you set everything on each channel evenly, you will be ok.

YOU CAN NOT:
1. present less than a 4 ohm load to the amp when bridged, or it will overheat.
2. Get the full potential of a 2 channel amp with a single DVC 4 ohm sub. There is just no way to wire it to take full advantage. Either get a mono amp that is stable to 2 ohms and has enough power to let your sub do it's job easily, or get a second identical sub and wire them to 2 ohms to each channel.

I have made this reply based on what I think you are asking, by reading other people's replies. None of your posts translate well to educated English.

your best bet and safest route is going to be to take that 4 channel amp and hook 1 speaker to each channel. that way you have control of fade and balance. each speaker will utilize the power alot more than a headunit can put out. get yourself a second amp which is a mono amp and use it to power the sub. that way you get the most out of your system and you can control how much power goes to what speaker and not blow anything out.

yea i know lol that was dumb on my part but hey with car audio sometimes the only way you can learn is to buy it and try it.
