I need to tune up my poor factory stereo

Ok I know nothing about car stereo's and the wiring, etc. This is what has been happening to mine though (2002 factory everything). First of all the left front speaker, one day, sounded like it became noticeably quieter. It still makes sound but I can't tell by ear if it's working 100% or not just because I think my ears have gotten used to it . Then I started noticing a real deterioration in the sound from the rear speakers. The speakers in the rear basically distort the low sound and the distortion kind of kills the mid-high frequencies. So when I listen to music, it sounds like the classic sub bangin vehicle where all you can here is a rumbling bass and nothing else. I've actually had people ask me if I had subs to which I said, "no my stereo just sounds like @!#$" To listen to music, still at sub par quality, I have to turn the bass to about -2 or -3 on the factory HU. Also, most recently, my front right speaker quit working completely. I can use the fade and balance to solo the speaker out and there is 0 output. So between the poor output of the front speakers, I'm sure thats part of the reason the bass overpowers everything too. And finally, I can't even turn it up that loud. I'm not talking loud like everybody I drive by can hear the music, but I mean the loudest I can turn it up is somewhere between 1/2-3/4 full volume, where it reaches its peak and will actually start losing volume the more I turn it up. So I think what I need to do is replace the speakers first? I know that the factory speakers aren't anything special, so I'm going to get just the wal-mart ones and replace them. Obviously not the best, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be losing anything from the factory set up either Would this be a good place to start? Also, I don't really know how to take the door panels off to get to the front speakers either, any help or tutorials youc an point me to?

take the 3 or 4 screws out from the bottom of the panel, one from the side of the panel, 2 from the "door handle", and the door triangle by the mirror, then take off the window lever if you have manual windows. the clip is in the shape of a U so use the tool that you can buy or a screw driver, or what i find the easiest, a pick.. then pull out from the bottom of the door and when that pops out, pull the panel upwards to unhook from the edge of the window. if you have power stuff, unhook switches with panel almost off.

What exactly is the window lever? Is it something that I would have to reach by going in through the top of the door where the window comes out, like when you unlock a car using a clothes hangar? Also what do you think is wrong based on my problems described above. Will replacing my factory stereo with an average set from wal mart be a good bet?

you may turn your lever, however, you may not yank your own crank. you might go blind.

I tried the wal-mart (stock upgrade) speakers and their worse then stock, extremely tinny. I would go to a store with a good selection or car audio (not wal-mart) and ask someone who knows what their talking about. 100$ for a pair of speakers is what it will cost to get better than stock, or thats what the range was in canada. If you want to do the deck it will give you some clarity and a bit of extra juice and their not expensive for a basic sony or panasonic. Just add an extra 50 or 60 bucks to the price of the deck for the wiring harness, adapter and solder/heat shink tubes.

My '00s rear speakers (stock) gave out. I'm tempted to someday check Crutchfield and see if my brother can help me put in a new head unit and speakers. Other repairs on both cars are more important right now though.
