Monsoon cassette/cd -> Monsoon mp3 swap (with pics)
Sunday, October 21, 2007 12:46 PM
The unit that I swapped out is pictured below and is the Monsoon cassette/cd found in a 01 sunfire GT... the unit swapped in is from a 05 grand am (same unit is avail in 04-05 sunfire/grand am's with monsoon) ... A very easy swap (takes maybe 5 minutes)... then a trip down to the dealer to get it reprogrammed... took a while to convince the dealer that it would actually work... (proved by putting the radio into confige mode, for those who don't know for the RDS radios that read Locked the config mode can be accessed by pressing pwr up-seek and 5 all at the same time)... just thought I would let everyone know that it is definitely possible to do... (p.s the bear is a local radio station) comments welcomed...

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

haha I was lucky to come along this one in good condition... fit's 100% perfect no problems mounting... and I love how it keeps the stock look... best part was the look on the techs face... i had called the dealer and they explained to me it wouldn't work at all... so I just had to go down to show them that it in fact does work... they wanted to charge 110 to unlock it but I told them that was ridiculous because I knew exactly what needed to be done (took less then 10 minutes to unlock) so i told him i would pay for the ten minutes.. they agreed so it worked out to be around 20 to unlock

went back to the dealer this morning and talked to the service manager.. he refunded my money so it was unlocked for free... he wanted to take a look at it etc... since they were told that you could only swap from year to year.... so 04-04 05-05 etc... and was really surprised when he found out this was from a 05 grand am gt haha

I did a CD/Monsoon swap to a CD/Cass Monsoon swap in 2004. Everything worked fine, but it just said something on the display, maybe "Locked," I can't remember when you turn it on. Took it to the dealer and then it said Monsoon.

So let me get this straight. You mean to tell us by pressing pwr up-seek and 5 all at the same time, removes the lock? Or am i missing something?

no pushing pwr - upseek and 5 gets you into configuration mode.... it allows you to test the radio for the compatibility and to make sure all the functions are working.... this has to be done with the car off... once you start the car the radio will read locked once again

Hey there!!!

Gee it's very sweet to see that a Monsoon MP3 would work in a 2000 Sunfire and I was right but now I ask what must
I say to my dealer to convince him that it will work? What did you tell him? I just found a Monsoon MP3 at my junkyard
yesterday but I just don't know how to explain to him or even convince him that it will work. Any info about this would be
VERY welcomed!!!

THANKS!!!
