Noob to audiio
Wednesday, March 11, 2009 12:14 PM
Im a bit of a noob to audio stuffs, just looking some input. I like to listen to alot of different music, and im not looking to top the dB meters, i just want good sound quality. I'd like 2 10s for subs other than that i am up for suggestions. I plan on doing this all this summer, and would like to keep it in 4-500$ range if at all possible. Just looking for input on which speakers, and which amp(s), and which HUs are nice for good quality sound.

Lanzar Max subs, Crunch P1000, Lanzar Opti 6.1 for doors, eliminate rear stage, head unit of your choice, box, wiring, dash kit and harness will bring you to your range.

car already has a shabby old sony explode, and my dad owned an electronics business so i have all the wiring i need. the box im going to fab up a fiberglass box. so that elminates alittle bit of those costs. Would you still use the same stuff? and whats the point of eliminating the rears stuff?

Front stage is good love and all you'll need.

By good love he means its hard to get the rear stage to sync with your fronts and you get an echoey sort of sound.

i mean you could do 2 12 rockford p1 12's cheap loud to the point. you could run tweeters from front wires and stick those in the rear deck that would be enough for the rear.
Re: Noob to audiio

Tweeters in the rear deck would sound like baby jesus swinging a baby seal while screaming "CAPTAIN CAAAAAAAAAAAVE MAAAAAAAAAAAAN". Don't do it.

the phrase p1 and loud are not interchangable.

You are looking to do sub(s), amps, fronts, and a head unit in the $400-$500 range? Am I getting that right?

Personally, on a tight budget, I would look to spend $100-$150 on a good source unit. You want at least 2 sets or pre-outs, and at least some kind of crossover/equalizer features. BUT since I'm sitting at home bored, let me see what I can find in your price range, that I personally know is good and will sound good.

Head Unit:

Alpine: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500CDE102/Alpine-CDE-102.html?tp=5684&avf=N&tab=features_and_specs

Clarion: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020CZ209/Clarion-CZ209.html?tp=5684&avf=N

JVC(on a budget, they do good): http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDPDR30/JVC-KD-PDR30.html?tp=5684&avf=N

Kenwood(another great budget HU): http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113MP238/Kenwood-KDC-MP238.html?tp=5684&avf=N
and http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113MP242/Kenwood-KDC-MP242.html?tp=5684&avf=N

Pioneer: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130P3100UB/Pioneer-DEH-P3100UB.html?tp=5684&avf=N

Front speakers:

CDT(this set is really great for the current price!): http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=5207

Polk(the tweeters in this set sound amazing!: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=6133

Good ol' Type-R's: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=5240

Cadence(bang for the buck, these can't be beaten... at all): http://www.powermaxelectronics.com/products/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=185&idcategory=88

Image Dynamics: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=6201

MB Quart: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=6725

SUB:
I honestly think for the bang for the buck, simply an Alpine Type-R in a nice ported box tuned to 33hz sure would be a good all around performer.

Amps: Look into Soundstream and Cadence for good budget amps that will perform well and last.

Basically, you have quite a few options out there.

Type-Rs are nice. I like mine.

Re: Noob to audiio

They are a nice "safe" choice. Put one in a well built and tuned ported box, and they just perform well. Especially for a starter system. For your first system to have a ported Type-R and a well amped set of components up front is just going to give a noob the right impression of how to set up a proper sound stage. And it will get loud when you need it to.

Means it's not his suggestion but he wouldn't say it's a bad choice.

thank you JL thats exactly what i was looking for. I was thinking of Type Rs myself, I just didnt know if they were as nice as some have said. I wasnt sure if kenwood made good stuff or not, my dad used to be a dealer for their mobile radio/CB stuff and they were top of the line for that stuff.

You'll be happy with a Type-R. Just make sure you get a PROPERLY designed ported box.

I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I get biased, but my suggestions are always things that I have run and I like. Dustin always hits the nail on the head as far as variety goes, and getting that Christmas goose from him early every other week sure is a treat too!

Panasonic makes great decks too. I might have gotten a fluke, but I picked up a deck about 2 years ago with 3 sets of 5v outputs, mp3 playback n'at for like 150 bucks, and I love it.

Funny thing is, Jeff, everything I recommend I have either heard, installed, owned, or a very close and trusted audio friend has owned. I don't recommend by word of mouth, that would be silly.

And as far as calling the Type-R a "safe" sub just meant that it is a great all around performer that a noob just can't go wrong with.

I wasn't doubting you at all brother. I do the same as well. It is refreshing that some people do a variety of brands, not just kicker or rockford fosgate.

I understand a tuned ported box would sound better, but I really dont want to take up my whole trunk with a sub-box. Would it still sound decent with a sealed box? I went the past 3 years with no trunk at all, and now that I have a trunk again, let me tell you it is nice lol.

Yes just make sure you have the proper airspace for the sub and a well built box and it should sound good.

Pioneer and Blaupunkt both are brands that make a shallow mount subwoofer. One or two of those in corners or in a single box would be wangtastic!

I don't know why, but I just don't ever feel right about shallow subs.

Yeah, i was thinking of building the boxes with fiberglass, and sticking them in the corners. Should be able to build one strong enough. I think im liking the Type R's but ill make my final decision when the time comes to buy em, depending on sales and what not
