Does having the speakers mounted on the door panel make a difference as far as performance? If so, what is the best way to mount the speakers to the door panel? I know I'd have to cut the door panel grille but I can only think of a large spacer between the panel and door to keep the panel from rattling.
2004 Sunfire I mounted mine in the door. Only rattle I had was from where the door handle is riveted to the door. I drilled out the rivets and installed bolts and nuts no more rattle.
Probably the only way you can make it look good is with some fiberglassing or it will look hacked together.
