Currently i have (4th hand) 2 10" rockford 150w RMS subs (starting to smell a bit) in a rockford box (starting to crack at the screws) and im looking to upgrade. I have the big 3 done in #4 with a 125A fuse on the alt power wire, a 34/78 yellow top optima, 105A 1.5 year old alternator, #4 power wire (60A fuse) running back to a fused distribution block (60AX2) Then 2 short (foot or less) #8 wires running to a 800W 2 channel sony sub amp and a 600W ExilE 4 channel speaker amp, 4 pioneer speakers (stock size), a good panasonic deck, and soon to be sufficient grounding (2 short 8's to a block then a short 4 to body panel. I Own 2 500uF Scosche caps but their not installed. I'm looking to get 2 12" 400W subs in a ported box can someone recommend me a pair commonly available? I am currently happy with my speaker volume and quality (i have the gain on the rear speakers turned to half and the fronts turned to 3/4 and subs max). I'm looking to spend 500$ or less, preferably less
You have your gain cranked, that's why your speakers smell.

Nononononono the gain is NOT a "just once" thing. It is set properly and left alone. VOLUME is what you turn up when you want to crank a song that you like. Ugh... I don't dare recommend a decent set of subs to someone who doesn't know how to install, tune, and take care of them.

well check some pawn shops for a decent 12 and a good amp. i like mtx subs and alpine amps for good just street thumpin. plus they are such popular brands you can usually find them used for a great price. i got a mrp-350 and a mtx 5500 with a q logic box for under 150$ used. just look around.
but if your looking for some competition stuff go with fi all day and look into sundown for amps.

i have 2 JL W'1s 13.5 inch and i have had them for two years and havent had a problem with them since..they are extremely clear bass wise and hit hard.. just my input..i know they are a bit pricy, but everyone else i talk to spent less than me to begin with and ended up spending more bc their subs kept blowing, ripping, etc..
Ok, thanks guys. I dont really like the idea of getting them from a pawn shop but il look into it. And FYI i only had my bass gain set to 80% and the boost was at 100%(+10) and i leave the gain at the same position always, it just smelled the once. I followed the gain guide at the12volt.com to re-do it and i dont like the sound as much. Am i supposed to adjust the equalizer and crossovers before or after i set the gain?
alpine type r gets my vote but if you can afford them the alpine type x's are the sh!t

I wouldnt buy secondhand pawn shop subs unless you dont plan on having them last. Theres a lot you cant tell from just looking at them. Ive used this story before. 2 Kenwoods I overheated them and one started smoking. I turned it off. And turned it back on and both worked but failed after about a week. So I couldve sold you those and had them die in your car.
And Anton if hes looking for under 500 Sundown is not an option. And QLogic is crap. I have a box of theirs made of particle board in my attic.
you can have them test the sub at the shop. i typically pick there biggest amp and see if it can take it. if you know what your looking for in a sub, likeif its blown or not, then you would be fine buying second hand from a pawn shop. yes q-logic is crap, any prefab is crap. but for prefab its probly the best you can get. i was basically using the name for a price reference. that stuff new would run you around 500$
BUT. ive said it before i like alpine and mtx for a cheap budget system. 1 or 2 12"s with a alpine mrp-500 or there new 600 watt amp will be perfect.

I can honestly tell you that there was no difference in sound in those subs after I burned them. Well until the VC delaminated and made a big slinky inside the sub. But for that week it sounds the same. Im just saying watch what you buy secondhand. Especially because it sounds like the OP isnt too audio inclined at this point. I would hate to see him put $500 down for a system set it up properly and have it blow in his face a week later.
My subs still sound as good as before, i did not notice any smoke. I just got my wire and finished my grounding upgrade and sounds alot better now. I live in a small town in Alberta, Canada with no friends with knowledge of 12V sound systems.

most gains never have to be turned up to the 80% range. that doesnt mean you weren't reaching maximum volume. not to mentione bass boost being all the way up. that will fry most things. sounds like you dont have enough power for your tastes so your trying to make up for it by boosting all your setting which will just fry more gear, sounds like you need more subs or allot more power to make you happy.

I have gotten 2 years of reliable service from the subs (i think they had 3 previous owners and i got them free) and they just smelled once and it has never come back.
If i had more powerful subs surely the gain would not be nearly as high.
exile audio pro DVC, they're like 140 each and i have 2 of em hooked up to an mtx TC8001, and they're amazing. Nobody's heard of them and they have such punchy bass its amazing. Plus they come with an ABS grill and look badass
Visions has a sale going on next week 2 12" subs in a box for 500$ Canadian. Their the light gray kicker ones i think 500rms, would they be good?

I'm going to suggest to you some Lanzar Max 10s or 12s. Once Dustin pokes in again he'll let you know about some Cadence components and amps that won't break the bank and are very decent.
Also, your gain is to match the voltage from your head unit RCA's. Mine are 5 volt, so my gain is going to be set different than yours, and I'm guessing yours is 2 volt. I also run a line driver that boots my preout voltage up to 9 volts, which changes everything again.

Ah, thats what that means i saw the volt marks on the sub amp. My friend set it for me originally, can i just use a voltmeter to get the voltage by testing rca ends?
Ok, i checked my HU manual, its 2.5V. I found my sony amp manual i thought i lost also

Very good that you are learning how things work. If the gains end up being set properly and the subs are wired correctly to the amp, and it still isn't enough you will simply need better subs and a bigger better amp.
At any rate, since Hoofy mentioned it, I will do exactly as he said... If you end up bumping up to a good 6.5inch component set up front, and don't want to break the bank, Cadence has a killer set. Hit up www.powermaxelectronics.com and find the Cadence CWM-6Kit speakers. Cadence also makes nice solid amps and I have not had a single issue with any Cadence amp I have used. I'm running one of their TXA-750D's on my JL W3v2's right now and can't say it has an issue providing a good clean 600+w rms as rated. Even their entry level stuff isn't bad. So for the budget minded, Cadence amps are going to be a major part of your consideration.

HAH, yea right, i have a wife and a mortgage a few grand doesn't come as easy as it used to. Especially as a laborer. Hopefully i can get on at my company as an apprentice power lineman soon. Anyways thanks for the advice guys i really appreciate it!
