Hairtrick on a budget
Tuesday, April 14, 2009 8:17 AM
Hey guys, been forever since I been on here lol. I'm building a new system but, sadly, it's not going in a J. I recently purchased a 2000 S10 extreme extended cab 4.3 with 105k for $2100. I'm in love with it, it's a bit faster than my sunfire was ; )
Back to the topic, I'm thinking two optidrive 12's powered by my trusty Hifonics 1505D. The optidrives are gonna be in separate ported boxes tuned to somewhere in the range of 22-26 HZ. I know that'l give me a nasty curve, but I love lower bass and I'm hoping for hairtricks. Any input, ideas?

If not this will just be a build thread, and in that case pics will be up as soon as my new power wire arrives : )

for just burps and getting loud as @!#$ that's way too low of a tune,... I just don't see the box being tuned that low really helping. Why is "the hair trick" all you are looking for? I mean.... I am way too into good music to build a sound system that doesn't sound good.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY too low of a tune. Go 30 hertz, shared the subs in the same box. You'll be hard pressed for some hairtricks with the amp though. Bump up the power a smidge and I bet you can move some air.

When I had my Fi BL 15", I had it on a crappy underpowered lanzar 250, putting out 500wrms. I could move my ex-gf's hair pretty good when she got near the window.

Not really able to do the hairtrick very well, but steering wheel and seats moved in my cavy with a single 10 and 250 watts aprox. Was tuned to 24hz in a 2.89 cube box.

I'm considering going with one 15. Then I can have enough power to the sub to make me happy and save some space as well. I just wanna be able to do hairtricks lol. Swapable ports?

1-15 would be about right in that vehicle. Sub forward on pass side and port to drivers side aiming at the side. Seems to work well in most extended cabs.
Interchangeable ports would work as well, if your looking to be metered at a higher freq for max spl and daily for lower notes.

Personal experience with a 22hz tune. No hairtrick just sounds flat without a lot of bass boost.

typically because the tip of the boost is around 45 hz then fades from there.

i would say tune from 30-35 hz for a good sounding yet low tune.

Well from what I'm hearing, I'm gonna go 34. That seems to be the magic number when I throw my dims together in winisd.

I understand my issues. I know my boost is at 45 hz. Lanman suggested me a 35 hz tune. Your hairtrick you want is going to mostly come from lots of cone area and excursion. What kinda 15 you going with? The Optidrive?

do a 15" Q or BL from FI

i know your thinking budget but look into them.

the Q has 27 mm of excursion. which i think is weird because the BL is supposed to be louder and more spl but yet it only has 18 mm of excursion. i guess its all in the motor......

JBOvert what is a ballpark estimate of what this "budget" is?

Budget for me is probably way different from budget for you.

Ballpark?
I push carts at menards lol. I'm looking to drop around $200 on a speaker. If I can unload my 15's sometime soon here...

I've looked into fi's mannnnnny times, not wanting to spend that much cash on a speaker.

its not much for a (in my opinion) top of the line sub. for the pirce you cant get a sub that can get as loud as Fi products.

PM Slocav he might still be wanting to get rid of his Fi.

Edit : I spent like 200 on my Type-R just to let you know.

You seem to be learning a lot and then you make a ridiculous blanket statement like this....

what do you mean by blanket statement? could you name a sub that costs 280$ fully loaded that can handle a clean 1500 watts rms. and it Brand spankin new because they build them as you order them. its a lean buiseness.

sure jl audio sounds great i wouldnt mind having some myself but for the price of one w7 you can get a BTL and half an amp. lol (little exaggerated)

and yes im very loyal to Fi. im soon getting me a BTL not sure if its gunna be a 12 or 15 tho

You said "for the price you can't get a sub that is as loud as Fi products". Well 1. Not ALL of their subs are built for SPL comp, so I don't get that statement at all... and 2. You are basically saying that within the price of their subs no sub can get as loud as anything Fi sells.... Have you heard every sub in their price range? Also, you do realize that enclosure, vehicle, and power supply has a lot to do with it right? It isn't JUST that magical Fi sub doing the grunt work.

I remember when anton was 100% loyal to power acoustic : P

One other reason I'd like to go with an optidrive is that by their specs and by what I hear, they like small boxes. And I'm hoping to not use my entire extended cab to put subs in.

Anton makes me club seals and punch myself in the face. All at the same time.

.8 for sealed, 1.1 to 1.8 cubes ported for my 12 inch subs. When you do your calculations, each sub takes up .25 cubic feet. Tune it to 36 and you'll be very happy for music, 30 will be semi decent for music, great for some hair trick loving.

You can pick up an Optidrive 1232d for less than 200 shipped, it's fully loaded, and although it's rated for 1100 rms, I've seen them take 2000 watt rms PER SUB. They're made in bulk, cause it's a fat business.
FI is not the best by any stretch of the imagination. If you still think that I'll punch you in the junk. After you're done puking and peeing blood, I'll do it a second time just to say hi. Do they make good subs? Yes. So do a bunch of other companies. You also mentioned about the BL having less excursion. XMAX does not equal SPL per say. I could have a speaker that moves 6 inches from rest that is 12 inches in diameter on 50 watts. You think that's going to be the spl monster? No. And newsflash - FI makes SQ subs too. They're not meant to get super loud like an spl sub is, but some do just because of the box they're in. Most SQ subs if set up right can put out some decent numbers for SPL. Sometimes it works vice versa. RE XXX comes to mind.

You have a tendency to give advice like you've been doing this for years, but you're just at the very tip of the iceberg. You know just enough to be dangerous, and that scares me and a few other people.
