Fiber-all anyone?
Thursday, April 16, 2009 6:24 PM
Have any of you guys had any luck with fiber-all holding up? I have cut out the center vents of my cavi to make room for my Digital EQ, I am going to attempt using fiber-all instead of glassing, I have drilled abunch of holes around the opening so it will seep through creating an even more stronger bond so far it seems to be holding well. i'm just waiting to sand it out and apply a thin coat of bondo to fill in the imperfections. I'll post a pic as soon as I can locate my camera.

Ok here's a pic of my progress so far, I still have to bevle the top to match the contour somewhat, I'll take more photos once I begin that stage. Also note I have smeared vasaline on the blue tape so my EQ will release after it's dry, little trick I learned from building sport fishing yachts.

Definitely. I'm going to try to finish up tomorrow. outside, I fumed up the kitchen and the wife didn't agree, so I gotta work outdoors now, lol. I'm used to the odor ever one else in here isn't. I still have to figure out where I'm going to mount my XM receiver I have the XM Commander permanent mount style. I was thinking of cutting out a place next to it in my dash itself I have plenty of clearance behind it there since the receiver is only about 3/4 of an inch deep. I will post more pics tomorrow.

doesnt look to bad. your just pretty balsy for not covering the face of your headunit. id over covered that entire thing, one small drop of resin and you'd have major issues.

Thanks, I did cover the leading edges with solvent resistant tape, believe me I was extremely careful! I just can't find my Fn' bezel that goes around the unit. I used to work for a sport Fishing Yacht company here in NC, I did pick-up a few tricks from the others there, I wasn't sure if anyone here has ever used Fiber-all instead of glass, this stuff is really great to work with, it nothing but chopped glass in a resin base just add the hardener that comes with it and your done. I appreciate the compliment, especially coming from a guy who has a car so wicked looking as yours, that's one of the sickest flame jobs I've ever seen, incredible!!

Actually it was pretty easy to do I used fiber-all instead of fiber glass it's a resin based putty with chopped glass in it. I do have an extra bezel what color is your interior? but it's for a Cavi though

I rattle canned it all I cleaned it with Lacquer thinner first let it dry then i scotch brited it, I used a thick type of primer from a rattle can, I had my son shake it for me while I used the scotch brie pad on it, I told him to shake it until the ball stopped rattling and it would be done then, so about 8 to 10 min of shaking was required. LOL then I told him it would never stop. after I primed it I wet sanded it with 400, I sprayed the first coat thin and splotchy let it dry sprayed coat 2 a bit heavier by the third coat it was pretty shinny I let it sit over night and the next day I wet sanded the color again cleaned it off and re shot 3 coats and let it dry. it was already this shinny before I shot clear on it but I put it on any way. by the way I only fibered the hole where my DSP is going. the last coat of the first time chalked-up on me really bad by today i let it sit out in the sun and get warm before I shot it again
If you can't get your clear to lay on shinny you may be holding the can too far away I was about 3 1/2 to 4 inches off the bezel when I was painting. If you are too far your clear will atomize before it lays therefore making it look orange peely of rough spray the first coat on thin then thicker with each coat 3 max. and let it tack between each spray not dry.
Also a trick to fiber-all or even bondo is to work it before it completely kicks off or you will go through a ton of paper trying to sand it out. hope that helps you out a bit.
