Computer Install

Anyone have any pics of a laptop (or any other computer for that matter) mounted in their ride? Lookin for pics of hidden installs as well as visible installs. i am thinking about doing this and need some ideas.

My main goal is to mount a computer somewhere in the car and connect an external touchscreen LCD. if i cant figure out how to go about that i will just find a place to mount a laptop so that it can be tucked away when not in use.

Why not just build a Car PC and get a touchscreen headunit for the display? I know a guy that build the PC inside of a CD changer. which he had mounted in the trunk.

so you want the touch LCD mounted where? In the dash perhaps? You could also just use a tablet PC, folding the keyboard under the monitor. Check out mp3car.com, they have a bunch of cool ideas.

this was something I rigged up, just to watch some specs...

i would love to get a touchscreen HU but i dont have the money and i have everything i need to do this except the touchscreen and based on some posts i have seen here due to where the HU mounts in my car a motorized face is out unless l can figure out how to swap the HU and HVAC.

Also that setup you have there is ok but i need to retain use of my passenger seat and if i decide to use a laptop i want to be able to hide it when not in use.

The passenger side seat was reinstalled, there was just no room to sit in it with the laptop there, so I would just unscrew the pedistal. This wasn't meant for a show car or a daily driver.

Have you looked into one of those mini laptops w/ a 10" screen? They shouldn't be too hard to hide. I always pictured a sliding tray in the glove compartment, or underneath it. Maybe under the hvac?

what kind of HDD and how do you have it mounted?

2.5" SATA laptop drive, 250GB, in the top rack (5.25" SATA hot-swap). The hot-swap rack holds a 3.5" HDD, so had to use a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. I have a matching rack in my desktop, so just remove from car, pop in my desktop and it makes file transfers that much easier (plus I can defrag/AV scan w/out worrying about killing the car battery)

Rack and adapter are StarTech, HDD is a Samsung Spinpoint drive (5400 RPM... went with a slower spinning drive on purpose... reduces the chances of failure).

I have a post in P&M (May last year) with all the rest of the components, but since I killed my web hosting, the pics don't work... I may go back and re-do the pics... may not... no sense in bumping a 1 year old thread just to add photos

Well depending on how in depth you want to go, you can do like kardain or you can get the all in one package.

I have this laptop I bought earlier this year it is my 3rd computer so it will more then likely go in the car. Touchscreen and the screen turns around and folds down like mentioned above.

I have been contemplating on building a pc for my double din opening in my silverado. For $510 plus shipping I pieced together a system with a 1.6ghz atom proc, 2GB of ram, 160gb HDD, dc-dc power supply, usb powered dvd burner drive, and a screen.

Seems like a pita tho, so not shure.
