Hey I'm installing a set of infinity 6.5s in my front doors of my 4 door sunfire and I need to cut holes for the speakers because I vinyled the entire carpet section and now the speaker holes are covered.
I have two sets of 6.5 speaker covers I could use. the ones that came with the infinity speakers and a set I got from a local store which are a lower profile that would be better for clearing the window crank if I can't replace it.. I've tried finding longer window cranks to clear the speaker covers but with no luck.
I need to cut a hole in the door panel for two reason, one right now the speakers are muffled because of the vinyl and two the last time I had last years model of these speakers in my door I wrecked both rubber seals because the spekers were bottoming out.
So what would be my best option? longer window cranks, cut into my panel to properly fit a set of speaker covers?
Also where could I find these speaker covers, my car didn't come with them and would they work on a 4 door? These wold be ideal for what I'm doing (deadbob's picture)

Have you thought about switching to power windows? That would solve the crank problem. There might be enough room behind the door panel to put a 3/4 in mdf trim ring so the speaker wont bottom out.
I have already thought about that, It's something I might do later on down the road, just not going to be one of my winter projects as I don't have a garage. I got them installed, I just cut the panel up and I'm going to mount speaker covers over the hole. 3/4" mdf wouldn't come close to working not even 1/2" mdf.
I installed a set of 6.5 infinity's in my doors over a year ago using the bracket that came with the speakers, about a quarter inch thick, dumbass at futureshop told me I'd have lots of room. Screwed the speakers because there is next to no room. Luckily Futureshop reaplaced them with the newer model, no questions asked. This time I cut a hole installed them the same way with the same bracket that came with the speakers and you can tell where it would have rubbed if I didn't make any cuts. and btw the the car is a 2002 4 door Sunfire

I was talking about using the trim ring (mdf) to raise the speakers so they wont touch the window on the inside I know it wont help with the crank knob. To avoid the crank, that is a tuff one. I have a 02 Z24 coupe and have not had to deal with that. Let me do some thinking. Right off hand I would have to say change the speaker, AI know that sucks and I would not do it because those infinitys are pretty sweet. I think you should yell at GM for having such a @!#$ty design. LOL
It's not with the window that I have trouble with, they clear the window no problem. Whats happeneing is the door panel itself is up against the 6.5" installed with a bracket that is only a 1/4" inch thick. because of that bracket it moves the speaker outwards enough to be touching the door panel in a couple spots. Cut a hole in it, problem solved. I'll post some pics that I took.

The 1/4" bracket I used that came with the 6.5s was flush with the door
I'm no longer looking for any help just posting these pics so other 4 door sunfire owners know what there getting into before it's too late.
and before anyone comments thats not how they're being left, i plan on covering up the white trim from the cut fabric and putting the infinity speaker covers over the holes.

This weekend I put in one side of my 6 1/2's. The only problem that I had touching is those plastic tabs with the speed nut to hold the tweeter mount off. Solution: cut them shorter, and feed a #8 screw from the back to hold it on. There will be a hole where you cut them in the plastic tabs, they'll hold perfectly, and nothing will touch. I even used 3/4 inch MDF for my brackets.
Those tweeter pods should have come with all 98+ cars I do believe. I went to a junkyard and got a set from a 98 so I could have the tweeter pod. And now you're screwed because you hacked deep into your door. Even with the tweeter pod, it's not going to cover some of that up. I would have just cut the vinyl where the vent part was so sound could get through.
I couldnt get 3/4 inch MDF behind my door panel in my 99 and I even hacked those tabs off like you did Lanman. Got pics of how you did it? My speakers have been sitting in my garage to damn long.
