Allright... so i got the dang thing in finaly it needed a smaller belt than i had and it was a random size 45.5" 5 rib so i had to drive half way across the state to get one. now that i got the belt i find out that the alternator doesnt charge good at idle. i think its because i have a light weight underdrive crank pulley but i dont know. im going to cal the company i got it from tmarro during my lunch break but i just dont know what the problem is. Like i said i think its because of the underdrive crank pulley.
so it does around 12 volts at idle and gets up to 14.2 at freeway speeds.
Whats my Problem here?

could be a voltage regulator, or it's not kicking on at idle.
thats what my dad said was voltage regulator but i dont know what i could do to fix it. it worked just fine with the stock one but not with the high output one?

Is your pulley on your alt the right size? Sounds like the alt is spinnign too slow and not producing enough voltage.
Is it possible for you to switch the pulley on the alternator with the one that you were using previously?
the pulley on the new alternator is smaller than the stock one. i owuld think if it was smaller than the stock one it would spin faster. but im not sure if i can switch them or not...
im going to call them today at aorund noon and see what they say.

called them up and they are sending me a smaller pully for the alternator. hopfully that does the trick.
but i might have to look into this voltage regulator thing cause before at highway speeds my voltage got up to 14.4-14.6 so it might be going out as well....

Hell swtich back to the old on and see if its charging properly. If it is then its not your VR.

The voltage regulator is part of the rectifier board, and that's inside the alternator.... so...
CS130D, which is stock in the 3rd gen, has a separate rectifier and voltage regulator.
Very dumb question, but did you do the big 3. David, Whitecavy, just did that with his High output Alternator, and the voltage came right up.

yep the regulator is in the alternator according to my chilton guide.
and yes i have the big three done in 2/0 wire however i thought that i was supposed to redo the alternator ground but i couldnt find a ground on the alty...
and i have a 97 cavalier with the 2.4 if that helps any..

There isnt a ground wire persay on the alt I do believe.
@!#$ your chilton. No one said your regulator was outside of the alternator. Unless you have some old school setup, or a setup like mine, it's inside the alternator. Ground the alternator to the battery, that's the best.
Lanman what do you know.
hahahahahah

I know when I'm said and done my stereo is going to add around 7 horsepower.

You might need an over driven alternator pulley.

I run a 750 double pumper pulley.

allright settle down a little bit i was just stateing that the regulator is in the alternator and that it is most likely NOT the problem.
and i think im going to have to go back to the stock crank pulley anyways. cause the voltage only gets to 14.0 with the a/c on at freeway speeds so im not sure if a smaller alternator pully will help it that much...

Why do you ask questions if you dont try the answers?
It's Anton, did you need to ask that?
