How to get better sound

I have a CD player hooked up to the car throught a cassette adaptor, I like that configuration for the time being. Can I just replace the speakers with these and be done with it?

How would they connect?

Wait what? What are you trying to fix?

The stock speakers are crap, even as factory speakers go. I don't like bass really loud, but even at a moderate bass level these just distort and make that sound that speakers make when you try to pump too much bass through them.

There's a few stickies up top about front and rear speakers, and there's these things called subwoofers that you can add too.

Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

I understand I could get a sub. But would I be right in assuming that to do so, I would have to get a new In-dash deck, and an amp in addition? I know the speaker size I need already.

You dont need a new head but you would need an amp

You could use a line out converter to run the sub.

Or get an amp with high level inputs

Look I don't know much about car audio so I'll be blunt with my talking. I don't need anything fancy. I just need new speakers that will give better bass than the crap factory speakers. Now, I linked the speakers I am interested in above. Couple questions.

1. Will I be able to pull the old speakers and directly hook those up to the existing wiring
2. Will the stock HU be able to handle the power of the new speakers

As for the amp, again I don't need anything fancy, and that is way beyond my comfort level of wiring right now. And would the stock HU even be able to handle a sub?

You wont gain much bass by upgrading speakers. The stock head lacks the umph to run a sub.

At the suggestion of a friend I checked out walmart.com and pulled up these, they seem like a good deal.

Now I'm even more confused. These are 4-way speakers... What does this mean, and will they still work in place of the current speakers?

Ok 4 ways are overkill. They have a whole ton of tweeter. Like 3 of them. They sound like crap. Just get a good set of 2 ways.

The only way youre going to gain bass is by adding a sub and amp or by getting more power to the speakers by adding an aftermarket head unit or an amp.

Speakers arent designed for low bass. Thats the subwoofers job.

Allow me to retort. The ones you are picking out are craptastic.

Now if you're stuck on a budget, I'd still go this route:

Thesundownfire> I don't want thumping bass. I just want better than now bass. I am not an audiophile, I'm just tired of listening to the speakers puke every time I turn the volume up beyond 1/4. My parents expedition gets by just fine with normal speakers without a sub.

Lanman31337> I like those. I'm going on faith here that the stock Head Unit won't explode using those speakers, right?

Your head wont put out more than it can. You wont hurt it.

Ok as long as I won't kill it... Out of curiosity, what exactly is the max output/RMS or whatever of the standard Delco AM/FM/Cassette Unit?
Re: How to get better sound

Probably like 10 or 15 watts. My Alpine head only does 25 rms. So I doubt the stock does anything spectatcular.

You wanna look at rms. Peak is a worthless number. Just FYI.

your parent's expedition may have an amp built in to power the speakers. Those really won't sound all that much better than stock being that you are going to be under powering them by using just the stock stereo's amp. You should look into getting at least a small four channel. BUT, upgrading the speakers is better than doing absolutely nothing. Like sundown said, your stock tape deck is pushing along the lines of 10-15 watts RMS per channel. Those speakers and more than likely every other after market speaker you look at will be rated around 100-150 watts RMS. That is 10 times the output of your stock deck. Will something come out? Shure, will it sound better than stock, yea, a lil bit. Can you get better sound if you power them properly? You better believe it!

For that you would need a 4 channel line output converter (or two 2 channel converters), a 4 channel amp, and an amp wiring kit.

Ok after reading all these over again, and getting more opinions elsewhere, I've decided to just replace the HU and the speakers in the future. I've decided to go for this particular Deck and mounting kit.

I think the mounting kit includes the wiring harness (is one needed or will the existing wires plug into it directly?)
