My soundstream might be fried...
Monday, October 19, 2009 5:02 PM
Well I was putting a sub/amp/deck combo into my buddies Ford Fusion on the weekend. Sub is a dual 2 ohm 15" Fi BTL wired to 1 ohm. Amplifier(s) were a PCA2000D (mine) and a TRX2000D(?, Buddies). Headunit is a DVD pioneer double din, don't know the product number, but it's new. Well after some @!#$ around we finally got the wires all in and we're ready to go. We're using 4 gauge wire, I told my buddy to get bigger but he went with 4 anyway, but whatever, it's big enough for some decent wattage. His amp was the first one we put in, as we thought it would remain in the car a while, of course. Well when we turn the car on, deck comes on, amp is into protect right away. I went back to see what was up and all the gains are sky high, I forgot to give them a look before we started up the car (DoH! Should have checked those!!) and the deck is at about 1/4 volume or so. So I turned them down to rock bottom to try to dial the amp into the level of his other speakers... Well during round two, the amp comes on, into protect for a second or two (I assume this is normal) and I begin to turn up the gain but no volume is apparent. The amp seems to make a weird noise and go into protect when you get the gain too high. Is his amp @!#$, I thought to myself. I thought I must have screwed up when I didn't check the gain settings.

Now, after all that, I figured I want to at least hear the sub. So I have my amp, PCA2000D. I've had it for a couple years now, and it has worked like a champ. I hooked it up to his car, gains down, deck volume down.... It goes into protect for a couple seconds when turned on and then goes normal, as the other amp did. I figure this is normal. So I begin to turn his deck up as well as my gain on my amp, and the same thing happens. Amp goes into protect. After a couple of attempts and wondering what is up, my amp goes into protect and won't come out now. Did I mess up my amp too somehow? The amps both were functioning fine until the RCA's were hooked up, but no sounds or anything ever came out of the subwoofer, even while the RCA's were plugged in.

Any clue how all this happened? I was thinking it must be the RCA outs on the deck.... but what would they be doing to cause all these problems? Too much output??

And just FYI, there was no "loud" or "bass boost" or "subwoofer level" or anything like that cranked up on the deck, all the settings were level 0, and the volume was never turned up past about 1/4.

If anyone requires additional information, please ask.

Possible speaker wire short. Or a bad ground.

Fire up the amp without RCAs or speakers hooked up to it. Then one by one, start hooking up things.

Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

I'll have to get the car back, but if I remember correctly, everything was working good until I hooked up the RCA's but I'll have to check again.... My amp doesn't come out of protect when nothing is hooked up, just pos/neg/remote.... Am I SOL? His amp still comes up with a green light when nothing is connected to it if I remember right.

Does your amp have master/slave capabilities? If so make sure you arent mixing the RCAs into the wrong holes.

actually, soundstream amplifiers with the master/slave have big issues with the switch messing up and frying something in them, I cant remember what it was now...and the picasso series have a power supply problem... found that out researching them, thinking about buying them =] lol

Spellcheck fixes broken amps. You have an internal short somewhere.
