Will it be okay if I mount a bare speaker to the rear metal dash. I don't want to cut the rear dash to fit the speakers with the use of the grill and the oem speaker adapter. I grinded the mounting holes to fit the jbl speakers with the use of the oem brackets. But thats when i noticed the dash wont fit. So is there a difference between having them just floating in the clip on type adapter or just mounting them directly to the steel dash?. Any recommendations? I'm new to speaker installation and the do's and don'ts of mounting. Any comments or recommendations are appreciated.
First issue is that it's not a flat surface, so using the adapter plates makes the seal to the trunk a lot better (and easier).
Why do you need the grilles? Will the speakers fit without the grilles?
Yeah they will fit without the grills. But the problem now is that I grinded the holes so that the speaker directly fits. Which cause the adapter plate not to fully fit over the larger hole. Only half of this adapter plate is actually on steel now and the other is floating of the larger hole. Will that be okay. I also replaced the foam lining that sits between the braket and the deck with thicker weather strip foam to have it sit firmly.
If you're talking about what I think you are, this is exactly what I did. I didn't use an adapter plate or anything between the speaker and metal. I just used a dremel to make the hole bigger, drilled holes for the bolts to hold the speakers down, and wired them up. They're still working great after several years. I check around back there every now and then, still good!
