Okay, here's the deal. I always buy high end stuff for my Cav. I've got a soft spot for JL Audio. However, I want to get some decent speakers for my daily driver. I haven't kept up with the audio stuff in the last few years, so I'm not sure what's decent anymore. I don't want to spend a @!#$ ton of money, but I don't want anything junky either. I'm thinking of some of the off-brands that most stores don't carry, but are well-known by audio enthusiasts. For some reason, I'm thinking Diamond, or something like that. I can't remember the name. Help me out guys.

RE just came to mind...that's one of them I was thinking of. I know they are known for their subs. How about the full range and components?

By budget you mean how many dollars?
What price range and what kind of power do you have to put to them? You want to make sure not to get a speaker that is built to handle far more power than you can give them or you will never be happy with the output. And what is the exact budget?

I'm looking to spend between $50 - $100 per pair. The cheaper the better of course. Right now, I've got a Pioneer deck that puts out 22 watts RMS I believe. For now, that is what will be powering them. Sometime down the road, I will likely get get an amp and push about 40-50watts RMS. I don't need anything for competition, but I do want some nice SQ. I would even consider spending upwards of $150 for a decent set of components, but I'm guessing that's going to be a lot more.

Fine, let's puts cost aside. How about you just give me suggestions on what is decent.

I would say that $100-$150 is not an unreasonable amount for a decent set of speakers. Are you looking to go 5.25" with adapters, or 6.5" with adapters? You wont be finding nice drop in 4X6's in any price range. It's just a @!#$ty speaker size. In all honesty, if you want, I have a kick ass set of PPI 5.25" components for sale. The crossovers are insanely adjustable(and quite large btw), the mids are nice and beefy, and they are supposed to have some real nice tweeters. I bought them with intentions of installing into my BMW, but sold the car and my new DD I will NOT be hacking up for speakers to fit. SO, I have those for sale for $80+ Shipping. Again, brand new, never used other than test fitting the mids in my kicks of my BMW.
These were discontinued and cleared out at a good price. They are worth, as far as I'm concerned, with their amazing sound for the price, double or triple the cost(and used to cost that much). So I am offering a good deal to ya, if you so chose. Here is a good review thread for the 6.5" version of them:
http://www.caraudio.com/forum/speakers/435657-ppi-356cs-first-impression.html
If you want them, I suggest you buy these off me, then penny up for a nice little amp. 100W RMS at 4 ohms per channel(2 channel amp) would be perfect for them. They will sound AMAZING.
If you want to bump up to 6.5", 100-150 is going to be a little more tough for anything that will sound anywhere near as good. But it is doable. I just felt like throwing it out there that I have a set laying around you might like. if they don't appeal to you, I can easily start digging into my dealer about stuff, or checking out lower end things for ya too.

@!#$ I need premium so I can get an edit button.
Incase you wanted some generic retail/factory spec numbers, here they are:

But trust me when I say, as long as someone is tuning the system that knows what they are doing, you want plenty more power on tap than the 50W rms their specs call for.

i went with SoundStream Picasso series coaxial 4x6 [75w] fronts and there matching counter part 6x9 [120w max] rears.
i liked them, sounded good just off the radio, and when i amped them to my 100x4w Planet Audio Torq Amplifier.
i got the Front and Rear complete set for $220.XX after all the taxes and so...so they were on average of 100 a set.
the amp was about $140.00 with tax and all.
I find it hard to beat pioneers for their price to awesomeness ratio. I was rocking their 50 dollar a pair 6.5's in my last car with most likely the same head as you (at least the same guts). i have to say that quality wise you could crank them to 50 out of 62 (yeah why the hell would the volume go to 62? yeah thats a nice round number) before the base starts to distort (it wouldnt if I had subs and could leave the base level lower on the mids). Sound quality wise? I was limited by the quality of the stock wires in my 16 year old car.

I have heard good stuff, heck I put good stuff in it for a bit, for giggles (friends speakers when he was between cars cant remember the brand, he did pay quite a lot for them irrc), theres wasnt a noticeable difference in quality, at least not one befitting the price difference, which is why I believe I was being limited by crappy stock wires.

Just because you pay slot of money for speakers does not mean they are high quality. . . Hell I have a set of Rockford FRC4369. 6x9's and they completely blow my pioneer 6x9's that they replaced and I know Rockford (atleast to me) is a solid company but not nearly an sq company. In not bashing at all but like jl told me, crappy speakers sound good until you hear a higher end speaker.

Don't mind if after that super technical explanation of the "good stuff" you "put in for a bit, for giggles", I still don't take you seriously in the matter of car audio knowledge and expertise.

idk why I always get in arguments in the audio area. maybe I just dont notice the quality issue since a lot of the sound gets drowned out by the exhaust (old car, cavy is still stock and now I have to get used to people not being able to see me in parking lots again).

This thread hurts me physically.
You arent going to notice the difference when youre running speakers off of the radios internal amp. High end speakers are going to need an amp to supply them with adequate wattage. The whopping 20 watts your head unit puts out isnt going to make them perform as well as they are designed to.
Edit: Meant adequate wattage not voltage. And see I can edit. Muhahahaha.

Lol leafy we are not trying to argue with you, simply trying to get a point across, and that point is if brand x is all you've ever owned or had proper exposure to of course its gonna sound amazing. When I swapped in my alpine headunit and it played on the stock speakers I thought it sounded clean. Then came the pioneers which were a step up in sq, then the rockfords, which have been the best speakers in terms of components I have owned. We are just trying to help you understand and learn a bit. Thats all.

I just came across some Phoenix Gold's on Amazon for a ridiculous price:
Phoenix Gold RSD6CS 6" Components
According to a review on
CarAudioMag, they seem to be pretty good, especially for the price.

Also, if I end up going with components for the front, would I even bother putting speakers in the rear? Currently, there are no speakers in the car at all.
