Ok here's the deal, I installed a small system in my buddies truck using my extra stuff laying around. Its an alpine headunit, alpine mrp-m650 and a single 12 kicker comp-vr in a small sealed box. Got it all installed but now depending in the circumstances, it will hit hard a few times but then the jeadunit seems to reboot. It shuts off, then turns back on and the volumes at zero. If the truck is sittin still or cold it does it at maybe 18, if the trucks warm and or moving it will play up to 22 but not 23. in the headunit, bass is -2 treble is 5 and. The subwoofer is at 10 or 11 out of 15. On the amp the gain is set to a bit above half, lowpass filter is on and set to about 100. I'm running 8 gauge power wire and ground and 16? Gauge remote. Now when the headunit shuts off, the amp light stays blue ( on and running). Any clue what the problem is? I'm thinkin its the ground on the headunit wiring harness.

Check the wiring at the head unit.
Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

random question but what's your feelings on using two of the same model amps to power a single sub? One amp per coil?

if i were to run 2 of the same amps i would strap them together instead of running them to each coil, the reason why (and i may be wrong but it makes sence to me) is that running the amps individually could result in one coil getting more power than the other.
for your OP i would check the grounds on the head unit like you said, i would also check the battery and alt, somtimes the radios have a fail safe for low voltage or amperage and they shut down, could explain why you can get up to a higher volume while driving.

Well yeah I'm aware of the whole one coil gettin more power than the other but if I do that imma spend a ton of time making sure those two amps are as closely matched in terms of power output as possible

You can do one amp per coil and keep your gains set properly between the two. Just set the gains the same on both.
Look up the MAXXLink by Hifonics IIRC. If you want to use your bass knob.
Seems to me if your voltage was getting low enough to kill the head it would also make the amp cut out unless its a cheapy one. But my old headunit would cut out before I got my Yellow Top.
Actually I asked my buddy and he said the amp cuts out too. Now don't hell at me but its a 95 ram that I put my stuff in and the posts on the batt are pretty corroded. He is comin ocver this weekend and we are gonna take thh batt out, clean it and do the big 3 with atleast 4 gauge if not 2 cuz he wants to put both my 12s and both amps in which would be a solid 1200 watts rms

Ok so I rode with my buddy today and the headunit started acting up so I decided to start messing around with it. I shut the sub off on the headunit and even disconnected the rca inputs and the headunit still shuts of. Now when it shuts off though, it boots up for a second then shuts off again and keeps going in and off. any help is greatly appreciated.

Check the harness. See if youre getting voltage on the ACC wire with the car on.
Ok I think its the battery and the big three wires. We were riding around and he turned his heat on real quick and the radio shut off. So I told him to turn his lights on andit did it again.heading to get some new wire and do the upgrade

Damn we used a wire brush and just cleaned up the old terminals as good as we could and that made a world of diddrence. Broke the negative clamp while trying to break a bolt loose so had to run to the mart of walls to pick up a new terminal and ended up getting two. Now just takin a breather before we five in .

Ok well we got done replacing the post clamps. Looks 100 times better. Didn't get around to doing the big 3 upgrade. Now the headunit was running fine for about five minutes then fell back into. The same problem as before. Going to take off the dash tomorrow and start testing. The harness. Its starting to piss me off.

It really sounds like the headunit has a bad ground... Even if you think its good, clean it up more, or move it, or check the resistance between where you are grounding to the battery, typically when I troubleshoot, I always assume that the ground is bad...

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. haven't been able to take a look at it because some problems came up but hopefully this weekend.
