So here is my set up...
Head Unit: Alpine CDA-9853
Preamp Voltage: 2.0 volts
Amplifier: Alpine MRP-M500 Amplifier
RMS Power Output (Watts x Channels): 300 x 1
Power at 2 Ohms (Watts x Channels): 500 x 1
Subwoofer: 15" Kicker L7 Dual 4ohm Voice Coils (04S15L7)
RMS Power Range (Watts): 75-1000
Peak Power Handling (Watts): 2000
I am running a 4 gauge wire kit with 10 gauge speaker wire. I have the kicker L7 wired like this....
My problem is, I am expecting 500w to be pushing this sub pretty decent. When I initially fired it up, the sub was barely moving and making little to no sound. After turning the Gain ALL the way up, the DB knob to +12 (from 0-12) and the Subwoofer setting on the head unit to +15 (from 0-15) it's making some bass, but bass you definitely can't feel. Now I had a 300w Rockford amp hook to this sub and it was slammin' pretty decent (before it got stolen).
WHAT IS THE DEALLLLL!?!?
Thanks guys!
Right now you're cooking coils. That's the deal yo
What are crossovers set at? Your gain is way too high.
Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.
I know all of this....that is my point. This amp should be rockin' the sub pretty decent with a proper tune and sub volume at 0. THAT IS WHY I AM HERE! Amp settings are as follows
Gain: all the way up
Bass EQ: +12 db
LP Filter: 100hz
As for the Head Units crossovers, I'm not sure...I know how to access the menu to change them, but am not familiar with what they should be set at. I have yet to play with the Graphic or 7-band EQ, crossovers, or time adjustments. I phone call would be great. Let me know if you'd be willing Lanman. Ill shoot you my number via PM.
Thanks!
*a phone call would be great
bring the car out here to Omaha, get a crash coarse in tuning and let myself tune that up for ya
SOMETHING is wrong. I don't have time to go over everything and diagnose it and all that through the net, it's like trying to fix a hardware problem on a computer over the phone, @!#$ that, call a tech lol. But how far are you from Omaha?
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Crazy....I am from Cedar Rapids, IA originally but not live in Hopkins, MN. I pass IGH every day on the way to Cottage Grove for work.
I am actually heading to Cedar Rapids tomorrow cuz one of my good friends is leaving for the army and is having a huge party on Saturday. I don't think I could make it there in time because I would be leaving for work at 5:00pm. I'd prolly just be getting there while everyone is leaving.
Anyways, Lanman and I chatted on the phone tonight and through a trial and error diagnosis we found that the subwoofer outputs are shot. The amp hooked up via RCA to the rear output the sub slams. I located my 4 yr protection plan and receipt from Best Buy....this is the @!#$ING CRAZZZY party. My date of purchase was 5/06/06 which means 4 yrs from that date would be TODAY! bad thing....it's 10:14 CST and the Best Buy's closed at 9! What are my odds of getting a replacement?
How did you find out bout that event in Cedar Rapids though? I may have to make a trip to IGH to have you help me with my tuning!!! You down?

I am not to sure But,I had a PDX Alpine amp and had the same issue...The issue was there is a switch on the amp that lets you select your input voltage for your rca's between 2 volts and for 4 volts,If it is on the 4 volt setting you will get almost no output,So if the amp has this switch it to the 2volt setting and you should be good..But I could be wrong.
Jason Jason Jason... I thought I said you weren't allowed to post ever again until you got me pics of the front interior? lol
And he already found the issue(which is super common for this issue), the preouts were toast.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Just my .02,
The pre-outs can be toasted (or really should say, WILL) from cranking the gain all the way up.
So it makes sense that the pre-outs are toast.
well my bad Dustin...When did he find the issue did I miss it some place, was early when i was reading it...I was thinking worst case bad RCA output,But glad it was resolved...And I hope to get some interior shots very soon,as I dont drive the car everday sits in the garage..
Yes, Really.
Also, the 100's of systems (not bragging, owned my own car audio company, and worked for a local place) I've tuned sound poopy with the gain way high, I usually (try) to match the gain to the pre-amp voltage. Then adjust bass levels and frequency from there.
My directed 2400 has more gain then I would like, but i couldn't tune it any different (every amp is different, but none should require 100% gain).
Make sure your tuning at 75-80% volume!!!

But how does thtat make the pre-outs on the head go bad?
Jack, no offence, but from the way you talk, I don't want to be one of those "hundreds" of people you tuned for. You don't sound like you have anything more than some super super super basic knowledge.....
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Do you know any of the actual ways to tune an amp? Sounds like you just figure "full gain bad, head unit at 75% good."

Thats what I was trying to get at..........
only real way tune an amp is with an o-scope...

only "real" way? How does Mr. "against the rules" even think saying something like that is right? God you're more of an idiot the more you talk.

Oscope doesnt help that much when your running music constantly IMO. Since none of songs Ive ever heard run a straight tone. I usually just set my gain so that most songs peak somewhere around 30 on my head unit and adjust song by song with my bass knob.
adjust song to song with your bass knob? I see. So you think tuning an amp or system pertains to just subs.... ugh. more bassheads that don't know what a complete or properly tuned FULL SYSTEM is. I see
Get those Rainbows in! And I highly suggest just sucking it up and driving out here so someone who knows how to tune real speakers can do it

an oscope helps so much! you set your subsonic with it, your LPF your crossovers, your everything! find out where your clipping, make sure your sending a completely clean signal at any volume at any frequency. its a huge help, and it really is the only way i will ever tune an amp again... if you have 2 amps a multimeter helps alot with gain matching, but making sure all your filters and such are set exactly the same (no, not all amps are correct on there numbers on the dial). it helps so much its unbelievable...

It helps... it's not the ONLY way to do it right. I'm willing to bet I have been doing juuust fine without it
