can't decide on a deck for the sunfire!
Thursday, June 17, 2010 9:52 PM
As the title states I'm having decision making difficulties. Basically I want a deck that sounds great, and one that allows direct ipod hookup. I am going on a road trip this summer and want to run an ipod off it full time. The decks i've checked out are from the usual brands, Alpine, Pioneer, and JVC. I have been looking more closely at the Alpine 9886, and cda-105. The Pioneer was the 8200, and the JVC was the 810, and the 900. I am not a car audio expert by any means, these brands listed are ones I've had experience with in the past. My factory deck is just beat and I need good tunes for myself and my passenger for the trip. My budget for the deck is 350.00 max. I'm not sure if that price range is overkill or not, but my eventual plan for the entire system is 6.5'' components up front and a single 12'' sub in the trunk. Anyway for now I'm concentrating on getting a deck, hopefully I'll pick one up this weekend, any advice would be fantastic! Thanks!!

x2

I own the 9886 and love it, aside from one key component...It has no Equalizer. That really upset me when I found out, after i purchased it.

Who the @!#$ are these "many others" recommending Kenwood over anything else? Certainly not car audio fanatics........

ANYWAY, for the "normal" or "affordable" brands, Alpine or Pioneer is where to start. the 9886 is an awesome deck for sure. If the CDA-105 has everything you want, and don't want to pay retail for a mint condition one, I might actually be interested in selling mine. My next audio project in my DD is going to require a Nak deck, so I shall be parting ways with the Alpine.

Not to be a salesman, but you specifically mentioned that unit lol

Thanks for the input everyone! I've been leaning towards the 9886 or the pioneer, but the pioneer just doesn't seem to be on the same level at all. Anyway I thought I'd go do some more shopping tomorrow. Since there are some positive reviews for the 9886 thats most likely the route I will go, thanks again!

Yeah. Pioneer has great build quality still, similar to Alpine. I still like their fit and finish, but my GAWD their wobbly knob obsession is horribly annoying, so I definitely say Alpine is the way to go until they stop controlling EVERYTHING with a multi-function knob. The 9886 is an absolutely solid mid level head unit.

Well I checked out a bunch of stores today, the 9886 was on back order and the 9887 was on for 300 bucks. However it was sold out! So I ended up getting an Alpine cda-117 and I think it will be great for what I need it to do! Anyways thanks again for all the advice, it helped me out.

Glad you found one you liked, but if you had your heart set on a 9886, Crutchfield.com is honestly where I would have said to go. Head unit pricing is pretty uniform no matter where you go, there isn't a huge margin on them. Crutchfield throws in wiring and install accessories for free too. And if they're sold out, will say on the site, if not, have it within a week.

Ah yeah I never even thought of crutchfield! Oh well this deck I got sounds awesome, especially compared to the stocker! I have been searching all over the internet tonight looking for answers about the illumination. Some places such as futureshop/best buy say it has switchable illumination, (blue or red). Some magazine articles say the north american version only has blue lighting, any idea what it has for sure? I've done a lot of button pressing and I can't find any color change settings, not that its a big deal though!

The illumination on that head unit should switch from blue to red. Check your owners manual, then check the PDF file that should be found at Alpine-usa.com
