right now i'm running an old sony deck that i wired myself, with a manual switch to turn my sub amp on and off. i just bought a DVD deck (brand is freeway), and have a few questions about doing a proper install. currently, the deck is wired to a 12V constant wire, so it always has power going to it, i just remove the faceplate whenever i leave the car. when i was wiring the deck in, the reason i wired the power to a constant instead of a remote is i couldn't find a remote wire in the factory harness. car in question is a 2003 chevy cavalier sedan, base model that came with am/fm radio. which wire should i be using as a remote wire to turn the deck on and off? i'm not worried about re-wiring the amp to turn on and off with the deck, i'm fine with a switch, but i need the deck to turn off with the key.
also, the deck has two extra wires; a "parking brake" wire and a "reverse gear" wire. i am lead to believe that the reverse gear wire is for a back-up camera (i will not be using one, so this wire isn't necessary), and the parking brake wire is so when the vehicle is in a drive gear, the deck won't display an image as this is illegial. is there anyway to bypass this so i can have video playing while the car is in motion? i was thinking along the lines of a remote power wire, or maybe just needing power at this wire constantly so that it thinks the car is in park? the car is a standard 5 speed if that helps.
any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. pictures available upon request.
The parking brake wire should just be tied into your black ground wire for any of the DVD installs ive done in my car. That should work.
However, your best bet originally would have been to buy the wiring harness adapter so it plugged into factory wire harness and all your aftermarket colors are there and it includes a blue lead, and the red goes to red and yellow goes to yellow, so it would work only when ignition is turned, if you have cut it off, I would try finding a wiring diagram on here ( maybe in the sticky ) and rewiring it according to the diagram ?
Good luck.. I hope that is what you were looking for at least partially, someone who knows more may be able to tell you the exact wires.

actually, i have a schoshe (sp?) aftermarket wiring harness adapter for aftermarket decks. on the aftermarket side, it has a 12V remote wire (red), however the plug that is factory from my car has no wire there. i am considering running a wire from the windsheild wiper motor under the hood through the firewall as a remote wire. is there a remote wire inside the cabin of the car to make this easier? i'm worried about tapping into ignition, as my dad has done this to previous cars and found lots of feedback noise.
Josh I think you want to run the Deck/DVD power wire to the fuse box. Mind you I'm not certain of the fuse but any fuse that receives power when the ignition is on, and turns off when its off (obviously). Um I have an aftermarket deck hooked up in my sunfire I could look at it for you tomorrow, for you.
well like i said my car is an 03. it is a base model so there is no A/C, however the fusebox has a spot for an A/C fuse if the car had air. i put a multimeter to the empty fuse space and it doesn't read any power, meaning there is no remote power wire going to the empty panels in the fuse box, otherwise this is what i would have done. i am completly stuck as to where to wire this remote wire. thank you general motors, for not giving our cars remote wires from the factory...
Tap into the "wiper" fuse. A simple search would have pulled this up easily.

actually it would not, as i searched "remote wire", "dvd deck", "deck remote wire" and looked through every single thread or post that came up and found nothing. either in my 2 years of being here i have been doing it wrong, or i didn't use the proper keywords. care to direct me to a thread?
It's because you're looking for the wrong thing. A "remote" wire is an output from a deck that turns on an amplifier/accessory/input device. You want an "accessory" wire.
i tied my power wire into my ignition wire so when i turn the key it comes on. as far as bypassing the dvd function you either have to ground the parking wire or ad an inline toggle switch from the paking wire to ground( had to do this for a pioneer one i had).
It's in my sticky, and lenko's sticky as well.

sounds like the deck i have. yes you have your basic red yellow and black wires for your HU but you also have your reverse wire (which your right it is for your reverse camera) and your parking brake wire. your parking brake wire is SUPPOSED to go to your parking brake itself so that when you rip the e-brake, you can play movies that way, but to get around that, you wire your parking brake to your ground to get rid of that feature (says so in the manual). if you have any other questions just ask. the ONLY downfall to the flip out freeway that i have is that the built in ipod touch screen settings get a little funny after a while. it sometimes wont change the name and artist but will stay the same even if you change it again and again. and also i found that if you have it on shuffle, then it will sometimes say that its playing a certain song, but its actually playing a totally different song. but other than that theyre fairly decent. if you have your RCA's for your sub though, youll notice theres only one sub out from the HU. all i did for this was run the red rca from that to the amp ald leave the black/white one unplugged and it worked just fine for me.
