Hi everyone, I hope to be installing two Alpine Type-R's 12" in my 98 Z24 convertible, and I was wondering what are the dimensions of the trunk for my box. I would go measure myself but the cars not at my house for now. Also if anyone can recommend a good sub box for me that would be appreciated. Thanks
build your own sub box. premade boxes generally arent good and arent the right volume for your subwoofer. also trunk size SHOULDNT be an issue, as i have seen 15's in J-Body trunks. (I used to be one of those people, you know cuz bigger is better)
"I did it because I wanted to see what it would look like. You should be greatful that I even told you that it would look good. If your to dumb to use photoshop and change the color of your own car then you don't need to see it changed. I'm not going to give my work away. I'll sell the pic to you though for $15."-Adam Kalin

bigest and best box for my car is 5 cubes on the nuts, external port

Well lets see. I had a roughly a 4.2 cubic foot gross box. That was the biggest box I could get to be removable. But since youre a vert youre going to have LESS space to work with. I think its considerably less but Ive never actually looked in the trunk of a vert J. The only positive is that you dont have to deal with the torsion bars in the trunk.
Yes, no bars and the trunk arms aren't there either, so clearance is less of an issue... but there is less room overall, the pass-thru between the strut towers is smaller and the metal tray the top rests in (when put down) is quite low compared to the rear deck on a regular coupe. It's below the top of the strut towers...
That said.. my 'vert is in the paint shop.. so I can't measure mine at the moment for you, sorry!
Id say to wait until you have your car with you. Theres nothing worse than building a box only to find out it wont fit.
Also if space is going to be an issue I would look into going with a sealed box, they generally tend to be smaller. I have my 12" Type-R in a sealed box with .80 cube inner volume if I remember correctly. I still have a little less than 3/4 of my trunk space left as well. If you want I could measure the size of my box for you tomorrow.

I fit over 6 cubes of box in my trunk when I had 2 15s and 3 12s. (My trunk arms were removed and cut notches in the frame behind the seats ) So fitment shouldn't be an issue. Check your user manual or a website for details on how big you should make the box(es) the manufacturer should have a spec.
Thanks for the replys guys. I agree that it will be best to wait for the car to be with me but I want starting point to look at when shopping online. I do not have much carpentry experiance though so I think I will be buying a premade box. If anyone has any recommendations for a premade box ported or sealed that help would be appreciated. Thanks
Carpeting is easy sir. Heres the link I learned from.

that carpeting video was sweet. I've been doing it a harder/not as good way. But, I think he was talking about carpentry. Its very straight forward to build a box, and you don't need many tools. I'm sure you know at least one person with a drill and skillsaw. If you do decide to buy a prefab, just make sure it is the correct size for the subs you plan to put in it.
Dam my reading skills. Hahaha. Boxes are easy to build. A few of us on here can kick out a design with measurements if you need one.
All you need is a table saw, a power dill, and a jigsaw or something to cut the sub holes. In lieu of table saw you can use some saw horses, a circular saw, a straight edge, and some C-Clamps. I built 2 of my boxes the second way and I even cut one entirely with a jigsaw.

screw that noise. that must've taken some skills. I can barely cut the sub holes with a jigsaw.
Before I was so spoiled with my table saw I could cut a razor sharp edge with a jig saw
Sawzall. Every time.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Twas just a little box and it come out pretty good for the time I put into it.
