Best 8" Sub to replace 13" W6
Monday, February 07, 2011 11:27 PM
I was looking to get something smaller in the car, as the box in the car is square, awkward and large and im trying to save weight and space in the trunk for an upcoming meth install. So I am going to get rid of the 13" to most likely an 8" sub. I dont want to lose sound quality, and if anything I dont want something as loud, but I will probably get rid of the Picasso amp and get something much smaller.

My gut thought is an 8" W7 and a 500/1 as I had two of them back in the day on a 1000/1 and know they are excellent. But I know you guys have a lot of other brands that are not as mainstream that I would be willing to take a look at that is same quality at a lower price or maybe higher SQ but same cost.

Any ideas?

I could get you into an 8" Rainbow Profi or Vanadium, neither are real cheap (Over $300 each), but they are insane little SQ monsters. They will sound amazing, but are not meant to get super loud. You won't be as loud as a W7, but they will sound awesome. It's all in what you are looking to get out of it.

He's comparing to w6s and w7s and wants sound quality, not a giant downgrade lol

sa-8s aren't a down grade....

in the correct box the sa-8 could kill a w6...

and guess what they are less then 150 shipped ea O_o

sounds like a perfect fit to me....

YOU HAVE ADMITTED TO NOT KNOWING SQ OR HOW TO JUDGE IT, HOW CAN YOU MAKE SUCH A BOLD STATEMENT?!?!?!?! STOP DOING THAT.

I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for when it comes to sound quality. Sorry but I am not buying that a $150 sub from a company notorious for catering to SPL folks being able to outperform a W6 or Profi or Vanadium at THEIR GAME. Sorry time, R&D, and focus on the subject at hand takes them far beyond Sundown in this one bubba.

I appreciate all the ideas. I am looking into the subs mentioned. At the moment I am looking kinda at eD vs. ID vs. JL vs. RE ( even though I head RE kinda fell off lately ). Rainbow may be a little much considering I cant hear it first or anything like that. I know the sound quality is good on the other brands, but I have not heard it to be able to tell how tight the others are and how low they can get.

This is for my DD, and I dont like overwhelming bass and Its also not a show car, so nothing crazy, I'd like something with some excursion, and a large cone, thats why I liked the 8w7, it had deep tight bass for such a small sub, and I would really want whatever it is to be deep and tight. ( insert vagina joke ). I am probably looking for two 8" subs pushing around 500w or so if something can handle it, most likely in a sealed box that I can fit in the back of the trunk that doesn't take up much room.

I have had a few brands, and not too brand loyal, but want something proven to be good for my musical tastes. Musical choices are speed metal and Rap lol, usually, but I listen to talk radio and pop or whatever, and dont need the voices on NPR to rattle my balls at 8 am, but id like it to surprise people they are 8's when I am listening to rap or something. I know its mostly in the box and in tuning, but that is my goal.

I hope this helps to make more sense. It may just be more confusing since its hard to describe what I am looking for since it is audio, and subjective, and it might sound contradictory, and I fail at describing things. I have spend 45 min editing this post and it still didnt come out how I wanted. So I hope it makes sense.

What kind of price for the subs, amp and box then? A budget to start would be key.

well, I have that Picasso 1300d amp that is pretty new. If I can use it. I could get the 8w7 for 269 and 99 for a box so about 375, and the ID8v3s would be 280 for two 8's, plus a box, so around the same price for that setup. So I guess around 400 for the sub(s) and a sealed box..

Sealed box for around $100 is reasonable. Now... $300 left for a pair of 8's or one beefy 8, that's tight for higher end SQ stuff, but doable with like the ID8's. If you wanted to entertain the idea of bumping up to one nice 10, I could get you a great price on a Rainbow Hammer or Amboss. Unfortunately I can't get down in your price range with a Profi or Vanadium, and they're the only line's that Rainbow offers an 8" sub in. So, I will admit, if you are sticking to 8" subs, I cannot help you with sales, but only with advice lol. But I can say a 10" Hammer or even the beefy Amboss doesn't need a big box at all

theres a reason i run image dynamics subs. 2 10's in a box that is just over 1 cu. ft. total if you want to save room you can likely go with a single 10 or single 12 and take up less space then you would with 2-8's or come close to it. id's will get pretty low depending on how big you make the box. the rainbows are nice as well. for your price range and goals id pick one of those options over most of what is out there.

Cool, I think the IDs are a good idea, and seem to have a good rep, I will look into those more, and compare the w7, and also if I start getting into 10s or 12's, I would probably just get a sealed box for the13"

Jason, do you know of anyplace local to us that sells ID that I could go check it out and compare?

^^^This. My iD isnt even a Q and I love it. I have my 12 in a 1 cu ft box. I still have room for an amp rack, boxed up sway bar, tool set and theres tons more room on top of that. Qs are optimized for small enclosures. Id go for a 10 or 12 personally. I keep thinking you will be disappointed with an 8 but thats my opinion.

nobody anywhere around here. its what i have in the sunfire. its very accurate. hit around 140 with 700 watts in a small sealed box built for sq awhile back. you can put an idq10 in an enclosure around .40 cu. ft. i believe im thinking the idq12 you could put in a box around .75 cu. ft. id imagine the jl 13 would need double that size sealed and probalby triple that size ported. the jl will take more power then the id. but you could problaby sell your jl and buy a 10" id and a box (if you dont make it yourself) and still have money to put towards an amp or something else.
