Checking Alternator Output
Friday, April 01, 2011 9:26 PM
Dumb question, but where do I check the output of the alternator and what numbers am I looking for? Do I just use the multimeter on the battery terminals and look for a 14v+ reading, and that means it is charging?
This is on an Ecotec if that helps narrow it down, I'd rather diagnose it completely before I tear off the intake and such.

That's the simple test, yeah. You can put actual current tests on them at mechanic shops, but for general diagnosis, just confirm that the voltage increases from ABOUT 12v to ABOUT 14.5v with the engine running.
