Wednesday, February 16, 2005 1:18 PM
Hey to everyone..im curious about the big three..i have upgraded them but i think i may have done it wrong. I got 0g from the battery to the batt tray and then to the block in the stock locations...do i need to go directly to the chassis. Also the one that screws me up the most is the alt. I got a 4g wire from my pos of the alt to the battery. Do i leave the stock wire on or not? do i need to ground the alt or is the upgraded chasis to block enough.....i get alot of light dimming and i am not running much power acually i get light dimming when i get real close to redline..whickh i know is messed..any help guys????..phil

ps..i posted in the last big 3 upgrade post but i didnt get any help....sorry for the clutter:o)

sounds like you got it...you can upgrade the alt. ground either way. directly from alt to ground, or by going from the engine block to the chassis. The alternator grounds through it's mounting bolts to the block anyways.

you CAN leave the stock wires there, or take them off, doens't make a difference.

Didnt you know? The easier it is to make a ground the better it is.

how much power are you running. if your running 1/0 all the way to the amps why are you not running 1/0 from the alt to the battery. basically your systems is only as strong as the 4 ga. wire.

if the stock wires are stil in place would it split the current between the the stock and 4g? if not, if it only carries on the largest cable then why leave stock wires on at all?

charge takes the path of least resistance, so the charge from the alternator will move through the 4g until it's saturated (full of electrons/current) and then it will start to fill up the stock wiring. (It's not so cut and dry, but lets keep it simple) Of course, saturating a 4 foot run of 4 gauge is rarely going to happen with our alternators.

Because the stock wires dont just go to the alternator and battery........

Current takes the path of least resistance. Shorter wire. Bigger wire. Good deal.
