I want to start assembling my motor this friday and I am contemplating getting a Copper head gasket insted of the OEM replacement. I have a 2.4 with JE pistons and Eagle rods 9.0.1 compression and will be boosting at around 12PSI with alcohol injection. My questions are,
What are the benefits
Is it reccomended for boosted applications
Where can I get one, any place local (Ex Advanced auto etc, places like that carry them?)
How much do they go for
Thanks everyone, I searched google for answers but did not find any sites selling them, the only ones that came up turned out to be page not found.
Thanks
Chris

Get a cometic headgasket. Havent heard about a single problem with them. Copper ones I have heard many people have problems with them....Just my .02

Yea, agreed. For what you're doing, copper isn't neccessary.
Blew it up
Where can I get a cometic head gasket for a 2k 2.4L?
I'm having a head built right now,I went and bought a fel-pro gasket so I'll just sell that gasket,I'm leaving the bottom end stock for a while and I would rather have a cometic gasket 4 when I put my head on even if it only lower's compression a little bit.

JTuners also has the Cometic headgaskets. That is where mine came from

very nice gaskets indeed (cometic that is)
Who acctually has experience with Cometic head gaskets on Eco or LD9???
I have had NOTHING but NIGHTMARES with Cometic and all of my boys on DSM's and B series motors.
They leak and you cannot do anything about it.
How would you like to put your motor together and start it and oil is leaking from the head gasket and coolant temperature keeps on rising.
You take the head apart and see that besides coolant and oil NOT sealing there is coolant on the piston tops which means even compression didn't seal.
I am running stock head gasket right now, but I have a L61, I have yet to hear Copper leak if it is done right.
O-ringing, machined block and head, and copper seal.
Sometimes you have to re-torque it but sometimes you get away with it.
Whatever you do man, good luck.
This is just my 2 cents and for the fact that my Cometic is sitting in my garage that I paid $70 for collecting dust after about 5 minutes of idling.

I think I am just going to get a delco or felpro. I know they work, even if I have to replace it down the road. Whenever I do head gaskets I use them, no problems. What about useing a delco or felpro everyone, suncavi? I am glad I asked, thats good info about leaking.

what if u doubled a felpro gasket would that be bennaficial
DRIVE HARD OR DONT DRIVE AT ALL!!!
I'm running a OEM replacement on my Ecotec. I have a Cometic that I am tempted to pick up and throw on but I don't know if I want to risk the leaks. I too ahve heard the horror stories on the Hondas.
I used to race cars, now I race myself.

Hmm well my friend has been usin a cometic on his h series motor for 6 months now and hasn't had any problems.....maybe hes just one of the lucky ones....

I have been running the Gm copper head gasket for about 10k miles now on my ecotec with no problems. I have noticed over by the timing chain is seems to seep a little oil but i think that is due to having those 4 torx head bolts and not knowing the torque specs on those 4 bolts. I also have my block oringed.
If your interested in custom aluminum tilt wheel levers hit me up!
Boostedeco the TQ specs are 18 ft/tq, even tho I got mine at 19-20.
I am glad you have a good experience with copper, just shows people that they can be good if done right.
I don't know if re-torquing just the torx bolts at this point would fix the leak for you since the gasket is already settled, I wouldn't risk it if I was you, just keep an eye on the leak.
And anyways it is pretty heard to do the one to the front you have to loosen the chain, take the Alen T50 off, and then the chain guide bolt off, and move the guide to the side to get to it.
But this means you have to take the upper mount off and stuff. lol
Bobby, I am pretty sure your boy was lucky one, and I am pretty sure some of the people with the Cometic gaskets did them wrong and that is why they are leaking but cannot believe that 90% of people that I talked to have.
So giving them a little credit there.
One thing that hit me hard, after I got done talking to their rep about the gasket leaking and about me checking the gasket to see if it is ok (They give you info on how to) is, he said you cannot re-torque them, which was the truth.
BUUUUUUUT!!!!! The thruth is now I have to take the head off again and buy a OEM gasket!!! Also, he tried to blame me not cleaning the surface right, having a pebble or something caught between the gasket, head and the block, or block or head being warped.
I straight edged the block and it was perfect after only 25K miles on it, and got the head machined which didn't need machining.
I used a Felpro on my Quad built, and I am pretty sure that when you come close to blowing one you will have had enough fun with the car, and you will go with the copper.
As for doubling up on the head gasket, I don't suggest it at all.
It is pretty risky as they are NOT meant to be doubled and it will probably cause leaking and seating problems even tho it drops the compression.

ive never heard any problems with MLS style gaskets like cometic's
i have heard alot of people that used copper that have had to keep re-torqueing and have problems with leaks
but with any gasket there is a wrong and right way to do it
the link karo added , is a nice looking gasket too
It is nice looking but not cheap either... depending on the thickness you are going to go with it can range from 185 dollars upto about 265 dollars for the head gasket alone.
They have some info on the site about how that gasket held upto I believe it was 1600 HP on a 289 mustang turbo charged....
Yeah, but you also have to consider that you don't have to pay for o-ringing now...I'm not sure how much that costs since I haven't had mine done yet, and it's probably not more than $100, but still something to consider.

Well this may not count because I have only put around 2,300 miles on my motor so far, but the cometic that I have for my LD9 has no leaks so far. And as far as I know the reason is becasue the MLS style gives some actuall padding for a seal, while the copper is, of course, metal on metal, which never quite seals as well, especially when motors do that funny thing of heating up, expanding, cooling, contracting. Just what I have heard, I have a copper one though in case I ever feel the need for madd booost, but until that motor, cometic MLS is fine with me. Way better than stock too.
22 miles per gallon and dropping fast...

Just checking, but you know MLS stands for 'multi layered steel' right? This is also metal on metal contact (obviously), and steel isn't nearly as soft as copper. Many people have problems with coppers leaking because they don't realize that they need to re-torque them, and sometimes they don't even bother to have the surfaces milled and o-ringed. There is also a copper gasket spray or something that is supposed to be used on assembly.

...listening....
I have the SCE copper Head Gasket in my living room. I'm still not sure if I want to use it when I rebuild. I hear good and bad from both sides.
